Re: Good riddance?

Yes, none of us in the UK understand this at all. Mind you, I didn't understand blimmin portugal turning up. I though it was to be a club of powerful european nations, all tested carefuly before entry, and hurrah we'll all be rich with lots of opportunities for living or working anywhere. Now it seems that any country can join in, provided that they aren't very nasty, or at least not, very very nasty, like Turkey apparently is, but we'll proably lettem off soon though...

Turkey

Last year when I charted a boat from Kos I enquired from the friendly agent if I could visit Turkey with it "No" was the response. Atmosphere got a little icier. "Ah well" I said "It'll probably be OK next year when Turkey join the EC". Atmosphere hecame O degrees Kelvin. "Over my dead body" was the response. Stirring it a little, says I "Why, they're all very nice and friendly over there." "Sign here!" was the response. Apparently recent history is still very new in Greece with their neighbours .. but not quite as much with the Germans, who of course, have a lot more money to spend.

These thing are highly dangerous period

Unlike a conventional powerboat, a personal watercraft can only be steered if it is being powered forward. Releasing the throttle to avoid a collision will result in a loss of steerage and control

Here's some figures on the impact force of a jet ski

SPEED 5(MILES/HOUR) FORCE/UNIT AREA 112(LB./IN2)
SPEED 10(MILES/HOUR) FORCE/UNIT AREA 224 (LB./IN2)
SPEED 20(MILES/HOUR) FORCE/UNIT AREA 448 (LB./IN2)
SPEED 30(MILES/HOUR) FORCE/UNIT AREA - NO FREAKING CHANCE OF SURVIVAL

A Jet Ski travelling at 60mph will take just 3.4 seconds to cover 100 yards without any means of stopping!!!

I was reading an article where a windsurfer in the solent had his leg broken 6 times and the jet ski only hit his board not his leg, wonder what would of happened if it had hit him.

Jet skis should be made to stay in desgnated areas at least 500 yards from other water users.

Anyone want to start a pressure group?

Re: the post

Why not do your own rewrite?

History is being rewritten all the time. And political history is what happened earlier in the day, which will be rewritten in time for the 10 o'clock news.

Compulsory equipment

The French have stringent regulations on the equipment to be carried by yachts, based on how far offshore they sail. I understand that one windsurfer was fined for being more than 5km offshore without an anchor and chain.

Perhaps you can help me, as you raise something I have never thought about with PWC's. While I am very familiar with water jet drives and their steering characteristics I have never bothered to ever have a close inspection of a PWC - I avoid them like the plague. I understand they are water jet driven, but do they have buckets on the jet for reversing? I suspect not?

You fool. How else would we have manage to distribute money fairly throughout Europe? Why should little French (Irish Portuguese Greek etc) farmers live on a pittance when you English have loadsamoney? How else would we have such cheap food? Who else would have arranged all those nice regulations and then make it impossible to conform to them (unless of course, you are the man who knows where your boat was in December 1992). Who else would have awarded you the right to work as a bus clippie in Budapest, while keeping your own borders clear of sponging riff raff? Who else would support you selflessly in the UN, in a spirit of brotherhood to a fellow EU member? How else would we have arranged for all those countries so far from the sea to have rights over North Sea fisheries, which were so clearly being badly run by British politicians. The truth is that the EU will save you from yourself, if only you could but see it. The best thing you could do is hand over countrol of your foreign defence and economic policy to Brussels forthwith, otherwise you'll be left behind. Like Iceland.

Re: I nominate me

As long as you dont expect the Scottish Executive to help finance your very local initiative!!

Let the lunatics take over the asylum. Move elsewhere. They'll soon get bored without an audience.

Good points. I thought the flag was about far enough really. And, to be a bit awkward and show my displeasure, I always fly the courtesy french flag upside down.

Perhaps the most simple instruction to be supplied with jetskis is to hold onto your craft after launching and not, as was witnessed in the mouth of Langstone yesterday, watch your pride and joy dissapear into the distance on a full flood tide. The RNIL were depatched to recover said beast.

am sorry, I thought the RNLI was in place to save lives, I hope they charged the same rate as a tug would for vessel recovery.

What happened to kill cords!

The engine wasn't running - it just floated off the trailer and into the wild blue yonder on a 3-4 knt flood current. He was lucky it wasn't ebbing otherwise it might have hit the Nab Tower.

The RNLI lads did spend a long time with the owner when they returned to the beach - hopefully a "contribution" changed hands.
