Talk about mad his first time on a jet ski went to iom it took 4 hrs . Then he is jailed for going on the island during covid.

Respect to the guy! Bought a water scooter took 5 hours to find the IoM then walked 15 miles ... must be true love.

Heard the pan pan from Belfast CG, cancelled about 10 mins later when he came to light. There are some mad bastards around

Enjoying a stay at the Jurby hotel for 4 weeks now.

Could have ended a lot worse for him.

these numpties need to appreciate.....we are life as normal here. Only possible due to border restrictions and 14 day isolation on return. If we get 1 community transmission.....it will spread like wildfire before anyone can detect it. Look at Jersey.

It was daft, rather than evil, so I can't help thinking that jail - even four weeks, which presumably means he'll do two, is a bit excessive, though I suspect I'd rather do time on the IoM than in Brixton.

OTOH, a well-publicised case like this will help keep unwanted covidsitors away, so some sympathy for the IoM authorities

The first time i went to the TT two guy's from Glasgow had beaten and robbed another man. 1965 IIRC.

They were birched and removed from the IOM by the next boat.

An old friend was a junior for the Examiner, the Manx newspaper. She interviewed them as they were put on the boat.

They were very keen to leave and never come back again too!

We had to stop in at the Isle of Man this summer due to the weather (commercial trip) and whilst we were allowed to tie up to the harbour wall, the local border force were very clear that if we so much as stepped onto the ladder on the harbour wall we'd be prosecuted. Apparently a women in the previous weeks had ignored their warning and had made her way on shore only to be taken to the jail in short order.

Fair enough I think. At that point in the late summer they'd had no Covid cases on the island and didn't want any! Just shows how well a proper set of restrictions work in curbing covid spread.

Quite right.

First Mate and I returned from NZ on a UK Government sponsored repatriation flight late May.

The first thing Ardern did, after consulting with the opposition parties and getting agreement, was to declare a state of emergancy.

NZ has this provision due to the ever present likelyhood of tsunami or earthquake.

From day 1 only esential business was open - fuel stations, pharmacies and large food stores. Only travel was by essential workers, everybody else advised - and policed - into staying within 2 kms from home for exercise.

We have a large circle of friends in NZ. Only two were working, a midwife and a tanker driver.

When we returned here we were amazed how casual most treated the situation, especially the young.

As an aside, with direct relation to the OP, most of NZ infections were bought in from outside by people not quarrantining properly.

And to give an idea of how well the NZ system worked, this picture was taken last week. Note old people in mass gathering without masks or social distancing.
Life is back to normal. Everything is open, apart from the border. There is some economic stress due to lack of tourism, but the internal economy is ticking along fine.
Kiwis can't get overseas without difficulty, so there is a roaring trade in local tourism that is helping make up for the forriners.
If only we lived in a small island country with an easily sealed border.... oh, wait.
