Theres a Jet Boat with an unusual Hamilton Jet Unit, Ford Essex engine combination on 'Boat Yard' tomorrow - sounds interesting. It's on Discovery Real Time - 9pm.
disagree, it was good enough for me and will be watching the rest, tom cunliffe is superb, i don't watch the channel too much as only just got SKY, it seems to be a lot diff from the usual stuff they show, which i find quite boring - there are too many house progs on normal tv let alone digital - if you goto PBO you can see the boat their featuring tomorow - looks cool.....
I just wish they'd stop re-capping every three or four minutes...we havent all got alzheimers..nor are we goldfish...I can generally remember what went on before the adverts...but I suppose it pads out the program without much cost.
Perhaps they have to pay Tom Cunliffe more for "original words".
I think if these sort of programmes stopped trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, ie the local village throwback with an IQ of 11...then they might actually do better and gain more viewers.
I actually find 'Getting Afloat' with Nick Gates much more interesting. Currently running daily on Discovery Real Time Extra, Channel 135, mornings and evenings. Old and frequently repeated, but much better content.
despite the mismatch between his obvious passion for wood and my liking for a good fire I have to agree with you - it's good television for those with any interest in boats and boating.
I can't however comment on the new programme yet but will try and make a point of viewing an episode or two the first time round..............

Gotta say if they made a program that just appealed to us lot it would (let's face it) be as boring as hell and nobody in their right mind would watch it, I think TV is for the masses isn't it - or d'you think they should spend all that money just for US - anyway we're watching it aren't we!!!
the whole point of cable/multi channel is that it isn't for the masses - interest channels are interest groups.
Programmes that try and span both user groups normally fail to satisfy either.
Of course when they actually make the programme they are not absolutely sure what the audience is going to be .........

Not sure about that either, they surely have to get good ratings - Discovery maybe a niche channel, but it has to appeal to a wider audience, i suppose they're a baby channel aspiring to make big boy stuff - you won't get hardcore boaty progs on the BBC, but you might get an aspirational make over show about boats - or whatever they call it, either way it's not going to satisfy our thirst for knowledge - but would us boaties want to watch an educational prog about how to become an opera singer, with diagrams, graphics and whatever or would you prefer to watch a documentary about some old codger trying to do it for real - i prefer the real story...
I thought tonights programme was a good example of excentric behaviour that often follows the person who buys a boat. Would you call your vessel "Essex Girl" after its Ford V6 Essex engine ?
Forget about its entertainment appeal, it was more about what you can do when you put your mind to it. A challenge that we all face from time to time at sea.
I also think Tom has come on a lot as a TV presenter, with a big improvement over his Island Race saga. He seems more human. A TV serial about his cruise in the Baltic would go down a treat on TV.
Anyway, if a TV channel decides to broadcast a programme with a nautical theme, we should not knock it. Afterall its better than re-run of Hornblower again.
Coz I know it's a fat, drunken forumite doing up a 1930's Sharpie next week and you should all find something else to watch. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
