Jersey diesel could get dearer anyway.

It would seem that the masters of the CI's want to put up the price of diesel to roughly what ours might be if red loses it's rebate and an appeal of sorts from Mike Stevens in Jersey wants us all to help prevent it. (PBO page 6 issue 476 August 2006).
Now I'm always ready to fight to make boating of all types more affordable especially if it means paying less in taxes but I think this particular appeal is a bit cheeky because not too long ago (dec 2003) Mike Stevens predecesor of the St Helier Boat Owners Assoc' (Peter Pitcher) wanted all the visitors marina charges increased significantly to stop the locals having to pay increased charges themselves. He also advocated reducing the number of visiters moorings in favour of locals thereby preventing some of use going there. With self serving attitudes like these I doubt I will go to the CI again and certainly am not inclined to assist in their current plight. What say you? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Take note, Althorne, that Guernsey is pursuing a quite different taxation path to that of Jersey. The latter's delights include a sales tax as well.

subsdised visitors prices and no additional taxation on fuel with the expectation of attracting visitors.............. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

in fairness Jersey were giving out vouchers at libs for a free nights stay if you had already stayed 2 ie 3 for 2 - so it's not all doom and gloom (just not very joined up!)

Jezbanks asked "So what are Guernsey doing different then? "

Primarily: raising social security contributions until that pot is self-funding. Currently it is subsidised from general taxation.
There are going to be some minor adjustments to taxes, but these will be dealt with in the routine way, and we won't know about them till they happen.

Briefly there is pressure on the Crown Possessions (Guernsey, Jersey, and Isle of Man) to level their tax rates as between the finance industry and other (indigent) industry. The Isle of Man broke ranks in a hostile manner and zeroised its corporation tax. Easy for them, they have a small finance industry and a huge income stream from VAT. Jersey followed suit, filling the hole primarily with a sales tax. Guernsey has now also zeroised corporation tax and will fill the hole as I said above.

Yeah it's becoming a real [--word removed--] us having to find our own tax money rather than stealing other peoples /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Strangely enough we are getting GST and not VAT, could it be because the folk in the UK and the EU know that if we got into the VAT system we would end up setting the rate at 1% /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I appreciate what OP is saying, I wouldn't spare too much sympathy for us, just as I posted a while back this proposal is complete short sighted stupidity - but that is a Jersey speciality. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

VAT is one of those good ideas that is a bureaucratic nightmare in practice. Jersey will be far better off with the sales tax IMO.
Relatively late on an alternative proposal for Guernsey emerged which, although consistent with both zero corporate tax and with level playing field concept, would have lifted the burden from tax-paying individuals. It was defeated. But it will return. Early indications are Guernsey could have a blood bath at the next election.

I was quite aware of the difference Guernseyman but my visits can't be restricted just to your lovely island especially as the friends we visit live in St Helier. It's a long way to come every 4 or 5 years from the Thames and to endure the rip off's all common on the mainland for the sake of profit does not go down well when you start to feel unloved or used.
