Having cruised a small mobo in the Canal du Midi, I wouldnt dream of taking my new P&J through that route. Leaving aside the peniches who have the "we are earning a living get out of our way" attitude there are lots of pleasure boat drivers who havent got a clue. I watched one Italian lot park their boat at the canal side as you would a car at a road side and wander off for a long lunch at a nearby restaurant. They hadnt used mooring ropes so the boat went off on its own. Saw numerous cases of boats bouncing off each other - those in charge mostly are drivers rather than sailors.
As for the Zombie thread - well my comments are Zombie too since they relate to experience at least 10 years ago.
