Jeanneau Keel Issues

The keel on my Jeanneau 36.2 needs some work and I would welcome advice on this. The keel has a coating that it white and has the consistency of gel coat. Does anyone know what this is, or what can be used to repair areas in which it has rusted through? The keel to hull join is faired with a filler that is harder than silicon sealent but is not rigid like epoxy. Any ideas on what can be used to replace this? My current thought is to use 3M 4200 since it claims to be sandable and paintable. Any thoughts are welcome.

The cast iron covering is gel coat epoxy, if you have bubbles, dont panic, just grind em out every year and cover with red oxide primer and then hammerite. I did this with my 351 bene, by the way, rust bubbles dont do any harm, its made of cast iron so the rusting is self limiting, the keel to hull joint, i dug out, sanded and then used black sika flex to fill the joint. The surveyor remarked when i sold, that he was surprised how good the joint was and that if ever i had to redo it that i should scrape out, sand and refill with sika flex, he thought it was original!!

A coat of epoxy high build primer would be better.

Thanks to you all for the advice. I will use the epoxy high build primer. The next issue: do I use that old tube of Sikaflex in the garage, or buy a new one?

Once opened Sikaflex has a pretty short shelf life before it hardens off so best check it is still OK before starting the job.

I have used Jotun Seaguardian and Hammerite No 1 Rustbeater for many years without any problems. The rustbeater is great for getting rid of any rust.
