I've lost some knots.

Lift the drives to beach position, get in the dinghy with a scraper and clean the drives and props , you will see a difference in speed and rpm .
Lifted outdrives twice in the last two weeks. As Elessar says fouling has been pretty bad.
First time after being advised about the possible cause of my power dropping. Props were covered in worm.
I use rubber gloves and a wood stick to prevent any scratching.

I've seen people mentioning using diluted hydrochoric like brick cleaner, to get rid of hard growths eg barnacles, is that a thing?

I can't get to the props in the water without getting in, as I have a deep swim platform. So it'll be a lift.

Maybe this is just the way it is ??,years ago we had an old brirchwood with 6L engines and it would do between 16 and 18 knots , this didn’t make much difference if the props were dirty of if the bottom was dirty even the tide didn’t make much difference ,we thrashed it flat out 95% of the time ,
sold that and bought a sealine 360 with kad 42 and looked forward to blasting about at 25 kts but the reality was much diffent , The kads are 3.6 L even a slight bit slime on the bottom and it looses loads knots and Barnacle even worse , Even though the birchwood was only 150 hp the torque was immense , the KAD is 230hp but at times I’ve struggled to get 15kts out of the sealine due to fouling , and sometimes only end up driving at 18kts ,Ok 2 very different hulls one semi displacement one full planing , but I put down to the cubic capacity , so maybe the boats under powered in “torque” terms anyway ,
Nick

Scala the boat you have is a true planing boat and fouling of hull and props will make a huge difference in % terms of knots dropped.

My boat is a semi displacement boat 18 /19 knots, as Restoration man, my fuel burn goes up 25% per mile but you loose only a couple of knots.

We had a sunseeker in once on water jet Drive cleaned hull and jets and it went from 22 knots wot to 38 knots.

If you have Nibral props ie Nickle Aluminium Bronze or stainless steel you van use brick cleaner, keep away from aluminium and rinse off after use if you do not relaunch within and hour or two. Brush on .

Fouling is your enemy. It will kill your speed and damage your engines far more than you'd think by just looking at it. First step is to get the hull and running gear cleaned. Twice a year in the Med from my (limited-ish) experience.

Yes I think it's got to be fouling but will also get the original commissioning PDI data checked too as suggested by VP, as we've never seen the rated WOT top speed.
Props aren't aluminium, I think I'll try the brick cleaner, will be a lift and hold for an hour or so, no delays. Thanks.

I'll get a lift and jetwash done anyway, and as suggested above will do a speed test straight afterwards.

You've obviously never seen me in my swimmers :) That is never going to happen, I'll pay someone.

Have you noticed they never seem to make wet suits that fit the natural middle age man. By the time your guts have been thrust beneath the ribcage your breathing sounds like a dog having a go at it's squeak toy.

I use Velox on my underwater metal bits in the med. If you don't you can sit and watch the fouling grow before your eyes. Its not perfect and it does slowly come off, however if your boat use is a bit unpredictable the props stay cleaner for a lot longer overall. Might be worth a try next time the boat gets antifouled.

I might try that. Velox not for sale in the UK, Trilux 33 suggested as an alternative.

I'm having it lifted and jetwashed next week and I'll do the props with hydrochloric if they need it.

Also in Hamble first season of the boat. WOT at 3700 rpm (D6-440). after 2 months and seeing significant weed build-up on hull and outdrive, WOT down at 3,500 rpm. Divers down there weeks ago, back at 3700 rpm (same weight). I am new to Motorboating and really surprised at effect of fouling and separately, of all up weight on attainable speeds. Slime is building again now again. Think this is an amalgam of hot weather and nutrients in a river. Does that sound right?

Well based on my experience I’d say yes. Which diver did you use? Probably cheap than a lift.

Had a boat full for the weekw

Might as well wee on your props. Same effectiveness as trilux 33.

You can sit on a sandy beach and clean your sterngear. The advantage of outdrives.

The lean whilst you’re dried out will make you feel at home!
