I\'ve found it

I have been desperately seeking an email provider that I can access from anywhere, which would give me an Outlook type service and at last I've found it. You can access it through your Iridium phone, using Iridium as your data gateway and then connect to the net and this extremely fast site and download all your emails from up to 10 other addresses and all for $20 a year, they even screen out large attatchments.

Simple explanation

The site for the email is http://www.fastmail.fm. If you go there you will see all the information. As I said, I have an Iridium phone, our provider is Marconi, we can dial to the Iridium gateway to the net and log on to this site and collect our mail on POP which is exactly what I wanted. The site is lightning fast and no rubbish all over it. so we can collect our emails either from our own computer, using the Iridium phone, or from any e cafe. Apparently there were three people who got this information before they went on the ARC last year and the service worked brilliantly but they kept quiet otherwise you end up sending everyone's stuff and it costs you a fortune.

Re: Simple explanation

Thanks Norma!
Checked out their site and it does look very good. Had been hesitating to start yet another account, but now might aswell do that. Like you I now have an Iridium setup, but I will also try out SSB e-mail. So I thought of just using the account that comes with the SSB email, which is claimed to be tailored for slow access speeds.
Had some quick tries with Iridium, so far so good. Curious how the two will compare, I want my daily Grib files for the weather routing software and of course let friends ashore know where we are.
Thanks again.

SSB mail

We also have an SSB but have heard that the Sailmail can be hard to use, there is also the cost of the modem about £400 I believe but you may already have that. Please let me know how you get on with Fastmail and do speak to the guy at Marconi he was so helpful.

Re: SSB mail

Yes, I did communicate with the guy at Marconi, I think his name is Nigel Bond, and yes he was very responsive. We had, have numerous Iridium phones on e-bay in Germany and I was close to get one which need firmware update. Marcony offered that for free.
Well for some reasons I ended up buying the phone in the states, together with a contract that doesn't have to be a year or more, which suits me a bit better because I will not be able to take of for good until 2004.
With respect to SSB I was going to use Kiel Radio, (another infinitely helpful guy), so he deserves the business. Pricing is about the same as sail mail, but Atlantic coverage should be much better, also they have a roaming agreement with Marinet in FLorida. What's also nice is that they load additonal firmware into the SCS pactor modem that makes it behave like a standard mdem so that you should not see a difference on the PC. They do compression, encryption and now use the new pactor III mode that allows up to 2400 Bd and is said to go still pretty well on really bad connections. I can tell ahow well after the summer.
I'll take off beginning of June from Scotland and plan to go around west Ireland and then to the Acores and from there to Madeira (second home for me) and later bring the boat up to the Algarve for the winter.
If yoiu are interested we can try to connect on SSB while we are both in the northern Atlantic.
Thanks again for the fastmail pointer!
Harald

Re: I\'ve found it

You may wish to consider something called I think www.twigger.com which if memory serves is a way to access your email when away from your home computer I think it works in most of Western Europe.I'll try and find it and come back.

Re: I\'ve found it

In last year's ARC I used fsmail from Freeserve, via Iridium. It is a webmail-based service with no images to slow things down and it also allows you to collect email from other POP servers by entering them in the remote options. You can also limit the size of incoming files and filter out spam - although I have yet to receive any after nearly 2 years use, unlike my old Hotmail account which is now completely unusable due to excessive spam - even with the filter set at max.
