Whatever happened to asking Solent CG for a radio check?

It probably designed to test the aerial match to the radio output impedance. If there is a problem & the aerial impedance is mis-matched a lot of the signal power is lost.

No, wrong frequency.

The Avair AV40 from here http://www.hamradio.co.uk/acatalog/Accs_SWR-PWR.html

will do the trick. Do not forget you will also need a patch lead with 2 PL259 plugs on it.
