Hi all,
I have part ex,ed my birth on the SoF for a 4.8m x 14m and sold my sunseeker P35 after 9 years of happy event free boating .
I have an eye on the ITAMA range -Actualy always fancied one
http://www.afyacht.com/schedaitaliano.asp?Chiave=279

Q what are these straight 6- MAN 700,s like (equivalent to Cat C12 and VP D12) Any thoughts /experience ,s welcome .

Wife thinks 46 is too big (Man V8 16L ) -have already viewed a 54 ( before birth move ) and 46
I think a 40- Man 450 ,s - boat is too small 2007 --modal for my requirements

Mmm, v stylish and I can see myself as well creaming along in the Med sun in one of those with a couple of Russian bimbos on the bow cushions. But what exactly is your wife going to say when you tell her to go forward and deal with the the bow lines and lift the fenders when the boat has no handrails at all? My SWMBO would flatly refuse and tell me to do it myself. I can see the Daily Mail headlines now "Woman divorces husband because he bought dangerous boat without handrails";)
Like the aft cabin. How about a Pershing?

I have been working on this for a while - well years
I,ve sold it to her on smooth ride minimal slamming and a dry boat -they have v deep v,s - hence over engine HP wise power to get the thing up .
We have of course witness these and rivarama 44,s slicing through waves-while all other are slamming .
Pershing -she does not like the wood lacquered /varnished interiors fingermarks !-great that opens up the ITAMA door for me .We have viewed a Pershing 43 and 46 - Dash is too high I will hit a rower or pot around the marina
wife is insured too

Well I don't think you're wrong about the ride. I passed an Itama a couple of weeks ago off Sardinia and I remember being impressed how well it seemed to be slicing through the chop and how level it was running. It looked great too. I mean if Daniel Craig had a real choice about what boat he was going to drive in his next James Bond film, he wouldn't choose a Sunseeker, he'd choose something seriously cool like the Itama! If the SWMBO's up for it, why not? Despite the fact that I have MANs in my boat, I can't help with any knowledge of these particular engines, other than to say that touch wood mine have been fine so far although I guess BartW wouldn't say that

Good going Portofino. Lovely machines. I agree with Deleted User about the ride and the james bond factor. The hull has a seriously deep V. Alas the precarious foredeck could get annoying after a while but that's an each-to-their-own thing. And the dashboards have limited room for electronics, but you can work around that. I don't think 46 is too big for this type of boat. I hope you find a great example to buy

I have the Man 700 (Straight 6) in mine and have had no issues at all to date, had the current boat for six years. Can be a bit smoky on a cold start up, winter in the Solent, but this clears when engines warm to 30ish obviously won't be an issue in the Med. Servicing is straight forward and I have done this myself except for the injector service as they are a pig to get out and beyond my level of expertise. Any specific questions let me know.

nice,

didn't realize they have surface drives!
For OP add says it was fully refitted in 2014 and it's Jan 1998 model.
Odd that he has around 10pics of the watermaker...

cheers

Thx ,seen " arrow Southhampton " it's near Athens and I have had dialogue with the broker .
Was thinking on picking one up Naples / Rome -more doable sea delivery -Elba -Corsica -SoF 2-3 Days sea state permitted in one of these -maybe just 2 days -daylight hours only for me .
Most 46's are on shafts -but ,Mario Amati wanted to get max power into forward thrust -the engines lie low in the middle ( no fashionable mid cabins here) 11 degree shaft angle AND the props are actually right under the stern transom .Rudders on the 46 are mounted further aft on a kind of tripod approx 1/2 M behind the transom - controlled by external rams -yup all exposed the" little critters " = Steering ram woes .
Arnesons in this case -you don,t really gain a lot -except I guess maintenance hassle I suspect ? over std shafts

The 42/48 ( same hull diff layout -48 has vdrives I think engines more aft -balance issues ? ) with normal rear transome mounted rudders + internal steering ram .
Yeah I know I sound like an itama geek !
It's founders -surname -reversed .

A few Italian boatbuilders use V drive set ups and yes of course the engines are further aft but often that's balanced by putting the fuel tanks and other heavy components like gennie and aircon unit forward. Also of course the V drive gearbox itself is forward of the engines too. I've had a couple of Ferretti boats with V drive set ups and neither ran nose up compared to traditional shaftdrive set ups

thanks for the sympathie Mike, despite the sad occurence with one of my MAN's, I still like these engines,
my engines have a nice proven record, >3000 hrs without any serious issue,
and the failure that I have now, could have been avoided by better and more professional maintenance, and "stop" the engine immediately after the problem occured.
from all mainstream engine makes, for me MAN still is the most rational choice (imho) re availability and prices of spare parts and service

back to OP,
this boat type is not really my cuppa, but when you're in for something like this, the Itama is so stylish and pure ! good choice !
but I believe I would prefer a pershing

Bart what do you mean by that? Did you use MAN agents for servicing? Yes I like the MAN V12 engines too; they are smooth and quiet in my boat and have loads of torque

we used to do the maintenance ourselves, oil, filters, impellors, belts, (all very basic and very easy)
but I was told that a MAN agent would inspect the vibration dampers for oil leaks, ...
and even that would not have prevented the braking of that metal flange on my damper.

Ok thanks for the info. I normally use official dealers for engine servicing but I will certainly mention this point to them

wow what can I say nice purchase. I never knew you where so close in this.

The foredeck of the Itama is actually very safe more then people think, because of its flash layout. No bumps and rides along the way. Please do not put any railing on it ;)
The Man 700hp are very reliable and a mechanic told me good things about them, while asking about the same engine for a client but on a different boat.

As I told you in a previous post the 42/48 is in my opinion nice as much as the 46/50 if not nicer because of its two spacious cabins. As you are aware both the guest cabins in the 46/50
are bunks.
The only thing missing which the 46/50 have (and I like it a lot) and the 42 does not have is the exterior galley, but I am sure this can be retro-fitted.

What can I say if you conclude please post some pictures!

LOL, I sympathize with your view PYB, because I also love Itamas, Magnums, etc.
But I wouldn't dare calling their deck "very safe" just because whenever a navigation wake makes the boat roll ike a pig (and indeed she does roll like a pig, when not under way), if someone is dealing with the anchor, he/she is going to be nicely thrown offshore without hitting anything.... :D

What would look seriously cool would be to run a s/s rod the length of the foredeck along the centreline about 100mm above the deck and clip harness to that patrol boat style. Then you've got the snaky Itama looks and SAS dynamics in one package.

Good idea bjb and a potential letter of the month candidate for PBO, but wouldn't the rod get in the way when Deleted User decided to slot himself between his Russian friends on the bow cushions?

Is that not safe on its own right :)
Anyways but the very linear profile of the Itama does make it safer then it looks and I was aboard a few. Magnum on the other hand, are a bit different because the bow looks up and the deck in not linear as on Itama's.
Same story to Magnum for Baia, and Otams.

Anyways to make into perspective what I meant, is that a railing less Itama is safer then a railing less Sunseeker (or similar), because of the curves this last one has on the fore deck.

I don't know. This stainless steel rod could have 2 poles at either end which might come in handy for my Russian bimbo friends;) I'm not sure about the practicality of bjb's harness though. What do I clip it to? Their bikini tops or bottoms? Question for PBO I think
