ITAMA 42 Man 700,s

Got to love a deep V .... takes a bit more to get going, but once underway, she'll handle the rough stuff very well... Here's our deep V... but on a very different boat.. :)

In the same vein of deep Vs (albeit yours seems to be even more pronouced). I came accross in Monopoli this hull of a Rizzardi 50' open, certainly for sale. Some air de famille? (Sorry for the thread drift).

I didn't realise that I knew any Iltalian but I'm guessing that follia pura tanslates as pure madness!
Wrong guess, I'm afraid. That translates in EN as something like... mandatory test drive for new Itama owners.

Portofino, they told you about that, didn't they? :D:D:D

Alf, do you mean that your Astrale and the Mystere are also deep vee?
Is there a rule of thumb or something on such definitions?
the ITAMA vee looks quite similar to mine, but haven't ever bother getting the angles at different parts of the hull.

also if you go too much deep vee aren't you in the SD territory (ok relates to roundness of hull at the bow and other things I guess)
All that is rather confusing (and off topic, so apologies to Portofino!)

cheers

no not at all Vas ,
Its looking round shipyards at the hull profiles which was the way I ended up seriously considering ITAMA
.
Not starting at boat shows .Of course i have been on them @ boat shows along with everything else ,but I was always really interested in Ride/ Performance first , prepared to compromise other things like guard rails .

I have noticed Riva,s and ITAMA,s slicing through chop at speed while others ( includes me in a Sunseeker as well ) either slamming or having to slow down.

When all the boats are propped up in the ship yard -its starring you in the face the reason -the Deep V and big props (presumably with the engines to spin them )

I kinda figured out this ride thingy - is a refection of the Hull AND the engines =The Pre Ferretti ITAMA,s overcome the deep V v,s seemingly lack of flat aft sections for lift and lower Planning speeds by ......
HP or loads of it ,There is a tiny flat-ish aft area ,planning happens here but you need more speed hence the HP .
Modern boats are designed MORE to meet market expectations , by a kid on a Cad/am computer who is under pressure to "max out " on interior Vol -" fit that trendy mid cabin in at all costs for the next boat show " and "you are not having those big engines- cost too much "

All this means flatter hull sections and basically under powered boats , and arguably less aesthetically pleasing to the eye??- bulbous topsides ?
This is more acute in the 40 -60 ft market . Higher up say 80 ft + builders of planning boats at this price point can offer the "desirable larger engines " over stock .
All IMHO

Portofino when you say flat-ish do you mean the bell shape in the bottom of the Vee?

That is actually made on purpose as it reduced the chance of spin out in following seas and also provides better cushioning when landing then a sharp Vee.
The Jim Wynn (Walt Waters) and today Micheal Peters designed Magnums have it and Itama always had it as well, as well as the Baia's.
Magnum are slighty a deep Vee (24) to an Itama 22. Naval architects call a deep Vee what it closses 20 degrees or more at stern (not midships or average numbers)
The legend says that the Itama 38 (the first fiberglass Itama and 1st open series and first boat to have underwater exhaust) was a copied Magnum 38 upside down,
with the design being tuned up unofficially by a certain Levi. All the old Itama's have the signature of Mario Amati as designer.
Now the confusion with this legend when you speak in Rome is that some will tell you this is the story of the Itama 38 while others will tell you its for the Tornado 38 (also called as Italian cheap copy of the Magnum).
Some know the truth but stay tight lipped. I don't know it :)

[continuing the slight OT...]

PYB,

just measured MiToS and it's 18deg from mid hull to the transom. Means it's medium vee, right :p
also checked the transom slope (trying to figure out the spot to bolt the passerelle ram) and it's 68degrees (or 22 if you wish) for whatever it's worth in following seas. Should probably start a new thread on that, apologies.

cheers

Thanks for those pics Portofino!! You were pretty lucky weather wise (with the exception of the last pic).

Your boat is absolutely stunning, I love it. C'est de très bon goût!

Re the new risers, was there a particular problem with the old ones?

I love the first pic, that's a timeless hull indeed. Up there with Magnum and just a very few others.
I didn't recall the pocket anchor arrangement under the bow, that's a very clean and elegant design, but in your boots I would consider installing an anchor camera (AKA AnCam).
TBH, I sort of laughed at it the first time jfm posted the idea, 'cause I'd rather have someone at the bow when handling the anchor regardless of any camera.
But with the Itama bow, I would definitely put that in the "very useful" rather than just in the "nice to have" category...

after one season experience with a AnCam, this has become a indispensible instrument on Blue Angel !!!
ao for mooring with the bow anker, (checking the pulling force on the chain while manouvring) while the crew is checking the fenders and doing the ropes, ..
used so many times last summer

nice pics PF, really stunning boat,
what's going on at Apreamare yard? I heard they were in trouble about a year ago iirc ?
that fuel station in Porte di Roma Ostia, there I had my first fuel for Blue Angel, (quite expensive iirc)
you also passed along Giglio, but Costa Concordia is gone now.

thanks for posting

Water tank is 500Lunder the cabin sole
