I don't remember a winter when we have used the boat less.

As we live a fair distance from the boat 167 miles to be exact, we really need three or four reasonable days of weather to justify loading the car and making the journey.

Our last visit was at the start of November. I know Christmas has intervened but I was hoping for this week but the inshore forecast is

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: West or southwest 5 to 7, increasing gale 8 or severe gale 9 later. Moderate or rough. Squally showers. Moderate or good.

Outlook: Southwest veering west, 7 to severe gale 9, perhaps storm 10 for a time. Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough, perhaps high for a time in west. Rain for a time. Moderate or good, becoming poor for a time.

And if its not blowing a hooley its persisting down with rain

I can remember some really freezing cold but clear and sunny days when we have used the boat in winters past

Anyone else find they are using the boat less this winter?

I have to agree, it's a pity about the weather, I had one nice day out just before Xmas but during the holiday it's been mostly wet and windy.

Fortunately I live only just under an hour away from the boat so nipping down for a day is no problem, if like you I was only going down for 3/4 day spells I would have struggled all year.

Never mind 2012 will be better (if we ignore the forecast for the week ahead!!)

We were in the same position last week, we could have come down on boxing day till Thursday, we had booked tuesday and Wednesday at Yarmouth, but Thursdays wind was F6 plus gusts, we had to be home Thursday evening , so we just didnt bother at all.

The booking at Yarmouth was a total waste of money, we wont do it again!.

Im still trying to sell the boat, its currently under offer but the purchaser is stalling on arranging a new survey date, the market is still very slow so im still holding on to his deposit for now.

Lets all hope the weather improves this year!.

There have been a few posts in recent times about Yarmouth.

Mainly due to the restructure of the harbour loosing it's natural charm, also I've never found the staff very friendly , I once had a not so nice pm from someone who was against my posts about the place, yet he would not reveal his identity, I'd say he was a local, Tony or something like that was his handle on here.

It's a great place to be in the nice weather, just ignore the test, dint bother trying for a mooring if it's gaffers or other rallies there for yachts, if you do go in the summer either arrive Thursday eve or Friday a m that way you will get a mooring, tell them your staying till Sunday you will get a good spot, if you say one night there not that accommodating sometimes so get in, that way you can always leave and go to Lymington if you get annoyed, which is a very pretty place, the harbour staff in the river and town moorings are proper gentlemen, I go regularly and to this day have never been spoken to rudely, there great.

Back to the original thread, I agree it's been really poor. Hoped to take the grandsons out for a spin over the holiday period, but forecast was continual as you indicated, even though the sea looked calmer than forecast. They all went home today - 1st time we have sen the sun for days!

Boat is suffering from underusage.

Perhaps those who keep their boats in the Algarve and fly down in less than three hours will be smiling.

Hi Richard

Sorry to hear you are not using the boat as much as you like too. I was out round Studland on Christmas eve, had the place to myself! Can't understand why?

Out on 1230 bridge yesterday, a few others as well. Sunseeker 40 and 115 outward bound for London just before us, didn't manage to get any photo's though.

Maybe, just maybe a good year ahead - I hope so, I was down to 160 hours last year!!

You don't half make me jealous Steve. I keep suggesting we move to the South Coast but it is falling on deaf ears at the moment.

Still this summer can't be as bad as the last one surely - we struggled to find 4 or 5 consecutive days of reasonable weather all year. In fact we never got out of the Solent (unless you count Chichester) and did less than 50 hours. Here's hoping for 2012
