does anyone else find Imray charts difficult to draw on? My beloved boat pencil (HB) barely makes a line on the waterproof surface. I suppose softer leads might do it, anyone got any tips?

The Pentel propelling pencil comes in 3 different thicknesses: 0.3mm 2H for technical drawing, 0.5mm HB for general use and 0.7mm 2B which is perfect for chartwork and never needs sharpening.

I asked this once.

I wont buy any more Imray for this reason, shame, as their chartlets are really handy.

Not only can you hardly make a mark, try reading them under red light. I have a 5W white light over the chart table, even with that it is near impossible. To actually make a mark you have to dig holes in the paper almost.

I was considering china-graph and a plastic overlay.

Still think the colours are all wrong and like I said, they are hard to read under red light.

Aha! My "beloved ships pencil" is in fact a Pentel propelling job. I must therefore seek out happiness in a packet of 2Bs for it.

As for red light, I have long since given up night sailing (in fact only done it on courses) in favour of being in the pub or wrapped round the missus.

Thanks all

My pro pencil kit includes:

Staedler Mars 780 with Faber-Castell 2H leads and integrated sharpener - for assessed exercises.

Several IKEA 2B 3" disposables - for distribution among the indigent foredeck lot.

One 7" Travis Perkins carpenters' chisel-edge pencil - for ruff 'n ready stuff.

Now, this is reel geekery!
