I have been in contact with Des Newman, author of OziExplorer, for some years now asking for news about when the development version I am using will be updated. He has recently confirmed that now that the CE version of the program is completed he has shifted his workload to the standard program re-write, which includes AIS support.
The present development version has no CPA or TCPA displays or alarms, but otherwise works well with plotting and displaying AIS targets. You can see an example here where the reports were most useful.
One problem with my AIS receiver, that I was too new to the technology to realise in my earlier report, that although a dual channel receiver, they are not both active at the same time. This means sometimes missing a static data transmission (every 6 minutes) thus making a long wait to get all the ship's data. Naturally, dynamic data is constantly being updated, which is the important point.
Many thanks, just what I was looking for.
I see that you are using a single serial input from the AIS which includes your own GPS position data. Do you know if it's possible for Ozi to support an independent AIS port?
The reason I'm interested is that I use a Garmin GPS set in PVT mode which allows easy upload and download of waypoints, routes and track data. Although the Garmin supports "plain" NMEA, that means losing some of the added functionality offered by PVT which I'd like to retain. So my preference would be for two ports, one to the AIS using NMEA and the other to the Garmin supporting PVT.
I have only used a single USB port for both inputs as output by the AIS receiver. Before that I used a Garmin 72 to input to Oz. However, Oz is very flexdible with comms configurations and I would be fairly confident you could use separate ports.
Support is excellent from the Oz site and there is an active forum (Yahoo ? there is a link on the Oz site) that could be more specific.
Thanks again.
Yes, I'm a big fan of Ozi and have always found Des very helpful so I'll probably fire off this question to him. I'm also a member of the Yahoo Groups forum although I couldn't find anything on there.
