Hi

I recently noticed that a member of our local club was using an App on his iPhone to calculate the race results from the PY numbers and so I tried to find one on Android that I could use. There wasn't one(!) so I decided to produce one myself.

I've now finished it and it is available for free on the Google Play Store for anyone with an Android phone. Please search under 'sailing race calc' to find it. I would love to hear your thoughts on the app and any way that I can improve it.

The latest version has the complete list of RYA PY Numbers so that you can simply select your boat and then the PY is automatically entered into the calculation.

Then, after I launched the App for calculating race results using the RYA PY Number system, a few people asked me to develop an IRC version which I have been working on.

I've now finished it and it is available for free on the Google Play Store for anyone with an Android phone. Please search under 'irc race calc' to find it.

This is the first version and I plan to add improvements over the next few weeks. In the meantime, it would be great to hear your thoughts on the App and any ways that I can improve it.

Thanks

John

Good for you putting something on there - I wouldnt know how to do it for sure. The app itself is a bit noddy if you are any good at maths but then with the UK education system you should have lots of customers. When I tried the app, the tablet immediately switched to portrait. The list of boats was a bit truncated too - shorter than the RYA list and of course the PY system has gone now anyway.,

Several ways to improve it. Racing is about beating other people so you could use the facility to enter two or three boats at the same time, maybe using a library of your usual competitors handicaps. After all the question isnt usually " what is my corrected time" so much as " did we beat him?" You need to combine the latest RYA handicap system with the IRC one.

One idea would be to have one that says are we beating him? and a way to log when you went round a buoy and when they went round a bouy? past marker or whatever.

Now that working simply would get some interest I think particularly on bigger boats...

Isn't the RYA moving to a new IRC-like scheme and ditching PY?

Hi Guys - sorry I've been away for a while, real work took over!

I haven't heard anything about the RYA changing, but who knows?

Just finishing off the latest update to the PY Calc App. This version allows you to build your own database of PY numbers so it is ideal for clubs that operate a personal handicap scheme or modify the basic RYA PY numbers to take account of local conditions. The database allows you to import RYA numbers and modify them, or to build your own data from scratch. Everything is editable, so it can be a totally personal database of boats and numbers.

I am just checking for bugs, but it should be ready to download in about a week. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

John

the rya has changed the handicap system and py no longer exists officially that is. within a club you can use whatever you want but in open races you have to use the new handicap. from your point of view the issue is that the new handicap is in irc format ie you multiply the actual time by the handicap number to get the corrected time not divide as for py.

have a look at the rya website which also has lots of handicap numbers for different boats

Hi Bosun Higgs

I still can't find any reference on the RYA site to them stopping using PY numbers for dinghies. They have stopped for cruisers but I think dinghies will continue. Unless I am totally wrong on this?

I have now uploaded the latest version which has the function of allowing you to build your own custom database. This feature has been requested by quite a few users who either have their own PY numbering system or use personal handicaps.

It is now available on Google Play Store for free.

Thanks

John
