Not 100%sailing related although it's used for nav charts
I have an ipad 5 which is charged by an lighting lead,
it seem every few months I having to buy a new lead because it won't recognise it's been plug in .
Is anyone else having the same problem?.
I tried original apple lead and non original both seem to last just a few months ?
Just started to wonder if it's the socket.

This appears to be a common problem. I have to replace my lead reegularly and like yourself have tried genuine Apple and cheapo lookalikes. I don’t know what the solution is but hopefully this thread might identify a solution.

I have similar issues. I am wondering if it is dodgy connections on the iPad itself - though not sure helps as no obvious solution

This was my thinking too , but why then as soon as you put a new lead in , it works ,
For the cost of an iPad , you would think they have a better connection for charging .

Fluff can be a big issue on lightning building slightly on the lead and a lot in the slot. Cleaning both carefully (cocktail stick and blower plus a wet wipe then lens cloth for the lead seems to work for me. Two years on with multiple devices in the house all leads work.

I find that the pins on the lead seem to tarnish and need cleaning, after this they seem to work again. None Apple leads seem to be worse.

It's not tarnish, it's most likely fluff. Use a cocktail stick to clean out a lightening socket, it's amazing how much crud comes out, especially pocket lint from phone sockets!

Genuine Apple or Apple approved plugs are the only ones to use, although the Apple ones tend to degrade over time. Anker make some really good tough ones...

Mine sometimes doesn’t charge but it does when I switch airplane mode on in the settings. It also charges very much quicker in airplane mode. This switches everything else off including wi fi. Just remember to switch airplane mode off again before you use it.

We have 2 ipads and 3 iphones in my house and we regularly have problems with charging. I discovered if I swap around the leads and plugs when there's a problem most of the time it works. It happened just the other day. A charger stopped working so I swapped the lead with another charger which was working and both worked again. Same thing with the cars. Mine stopped working some time back and I swapped it with the lead in my wife's car and both are still working away fine. If anyone is interested in a technical explanation for this please ask elsewhere because I haven't a breeze.

Agree that sometimes fluff etc on the phones but my leads stop when used on 3 different phones and 4 different iPads the IPads done get fluff from pockets. Cleaning always seems to work

My iPad2 has lost all its teeth and is going bald but touch wood I've not had a problem with the original lead and its original mains plug or a Belkin charging lead I use on the boat. Maybe it's a case of Hutber's law in action - 'improvement means deterioration'.

As others have said it's often fluff in the socket.

I'm increasingly frustrated by the fact that Apple tie you into their own systems, apps, storage, and chargers so am planning to move away from apple and over to Android.

+1 for fluff. I had your exact same problem and someone told me about fluff, used a needle to pick out and was surprised at the amount that eventually came free. No problems since and all my old and new leads work as normal now.

Just don't - I tried it for a year with and it drove me insane. Everything worked apart from Bluetooth in car, and there were lots more options than Apple gives but once you get used to iPhones and iPads then alternatives feel clunky and wrong. I wish I'd waited a couple of years before I bought my first smartphone as there is so much more I could do on Android device but it's too late now.

Had the same problem. I switched to Amazon Basic leads which are Apple approved and cheaper and more durable in my experience.

Also had a separate non-charging issue where the socket in the iPad had got loose. Apple couldn’t repair, they replaced with an identical new iPad, at some weight-loss in the wallet area.

All good interesting stuff .
I try out lot of different combination turning on and off , air mode, turning leads around , make no different , but as soon as I plug in a new lead , works fine for a month to six weeks before I have to replace it .
In my case I don't think it's fluff other wise I have the same problem with a new lead .
I think some of the problem is the leads contact are so Mico , that it doesn't take long for it to stop making good contact .
