Thought I'd tap the collective wisdom…. We'll be in the Ionian from Easter Saturday onwards and I just wondered if any of you local to the area happen to know when places like Spartakhori, Sivota, Kioni etc. start opening up properly. I seem to recall Andreas at the Yacht Bar in Sivota saying in October he was planning to open around 20 April, but of course these things change ;) If anyone's out there already, I'd be grateful for any info. Thanks in advance

You can rest assured that most bars/Tavernas will be open for easter and fireworks, because the Greek easter is late, most bars will stay open for the season, easter Friday most places have a midnight churchy sort of parade, then again it could be Saturday where candles are used to burn crosses over the doors, on Sunday ie after midnight, he is risen, fireworks everywhere, well worth watching, I am sure you can tell that I am not very religious, but I do enjoy a good Pi$$ up!

I can't imagine many places in Greece not being open for Holy Week but a lot of places don't open on Easter Sunday itself, which is a family day, a bit like Christmas in the UK.

Seriously, fireworks? Note to self: remember to pack the Rescue Remedy for the ship's dog and potentially find somewhere out of the way to anchor on Sunday night!

Thanks for the info, sounds like we shouldn't have to cook every night then

To explain the fireworks a little. All the church goers go to church on Saturday night, the come out of church at midnight, hundreds of em parade down the harbourside holding candles, they keep these lit until they get home and then they burn a little cross over their door to ward off evil spirits. when the parade is over the fireworks are let off. this is what happens in my locality (Agia Efimia Kefalonia) On Chios two churches fire rockets at one another, it will be on u tube, well worth watching!

The fireworks are on Saturday night, usually at midnight.
Yes. Errm, warning about fireworks. A large number of them are thunderflashes - often high capacity. They're lobbed all over the place, usually by small boys. You need to be nimble to avoid damage. The balance are out of date flares. A reliable way of disposing of them. Rockets are often discharged horizontally in order to make people leap into the air.

It's elf 'n safety, Greek style . . . tuition in avoiding explosive threats.
