Does anyone have any experience of Intruder/ Burglar Alarms onboard?
I am considering using one. Are there any 'stand alone' types with their own battery power, and what are the most reliable/ effective?

I sought advice from a few people on this, the concensus seemed to go to somewhere like B&Q and configure / install your own.

good luck

Bought one from B&Q, takes it's own battery or external supply, with remote control to arm/disarm cost about £20 and was described as a shed alarm I think.

The only trouble is switching on some of the wheel house flourescent fittings sometimes arms it so you need to keep the remote handy.

My old boat I bought a 9V PIR intruder alarm, with horn and switch combined .... it was about 4" x 2" x 2" ...... I connected 12V direct from the domestic battery and bypassed the inbuilt switch. I knew where the switch was, and the intruder could only see the original inbuilt one. The extra bit of voltage created a louder alarm ! But it worked a treat.

I am now considering on my present boat the self-contained Door Alarms. This is a small box containing alarm gubbins hung on the door frame and a magnetic strip fastened on the door. Close the door and all is well, open it and the reed switch sets of the alarm. They are sold in packs of 2 and shouldn't cost more than about £20 the pair. You can do away with the 9V as I did on my previous and bypass the integral switch with the 12V supply from the boats battery system ... having the two allows coverage of fore-hatch and the main hatchway. QED.

in fact .... checking Maplins ... gives this :

Code : YE66W - Item : Window Alarm £7.99 incl. VAT

Description:
"An ultra-miniature window and door alarm that can be installed quickly and easily. Simple stick-on installation means you can install this device in under a minute! Once installed the alarm protects against entry with a powerful 95dB siren that will warn away burglars and prowlers while alerting you instantly. Operation is from a 12V, 23A-type battery (provided). Simple ON/OFF switch operation. Supplied with full operating instructions, self adhesive pads and a window sticker. "

So there you go ..... this ones even 12V and ready to stick on and go !!!! Just bypass the internal switch and wire up an alternative to save your ears when entering the boat !!!!!

Cheers

Hi Angus
Ive just bought a cheap infa red movement alarm from B@Q it cost £20 it uses a remote key fob to switch the thing on and off it takes AA batteries but also connects to a 12v system.
it also has two sirens which emit 115 db it certainly is loud
I havnt used it yet but i intend to put one siren outside and one inside
For the price i think it is a very good answer to security
