internet on boats

hi all can any one help ... would like to take me pc out to the med this year to use on my yacht .. can any one tell me the best way i can get internet service with it costing a bomb.. i do have a moble which is on contract by think it be too much that way.. thanks all ....

If you want to connect to the Internet "on the move" then the mobile is the only answer. Don't know about abroad, but the way to do it in Britain without costing an arm and a leg is to use a contract which allows you to download eg e-mails on the basis of the number of Mb involved, rather than the time taken. Worth contacting your service provider for information.

If you have SSB, have a look at sailmail.com. They tell you what you will need in terms of modems.
Cost of subscription is something like US$200 per year.

There is certainly WiFi (802.11) wireless access from Marina bay in Gibraltar, and I know that the company running it is rolling out service in a number of marinas in that part of the world (ie. Spain)...

I cannot remember though who it is doing it. A call to the marina office there would probably uncover it (if you are that keen to know).

The service is on some kind of subscription - expensive on a daily basis, but very reasonable monthly (and it works!)

Check out vodafone, they do neat little GPRS card/modem that fits into a laptop.

I have been using it successfully for the last few months here and abroad.

It will give speed up to about 42K/bps and you only pay for the data.
