Our little Pegasus 700 has a small ~30 litre GRP water tank that is moulded to fit the shape of it's location. We have never used it for drinking from because it tasted awful and have never really been able to get the gelcoat inside of the tank clean. So, one of this years winter projects is to replace all the manky 30+ year old plumbing and give the tank a really good clean. I got the tank home in the workshop and set to cleaning the inside thru the 4 inch hatch but there was loads of sticky black goo coming from around the lid seal almost like unset black sikaflex, so with a bit of work I was able to separate the halves to really get at it. It's disgusting inside, the gelcoat finish is stained and has lots of little bumps - probably osmosis! The only real way to get it clean was to take some sanding pads to it.
I was going to abandon it in favor of a small flexible water tank, so I ordered one, a 55 litre tank which came yesterday, but now I have that in my hands I really don't think it will work. Its physcial dimensions were always going to be too big but I thought it might be flexible enough to conform to the shape/space available but I can't see that it will be of an real use at all. A custom made tank is not in our budget.
So I'm back to the original tank. Since we are wanting to use this for drinking water and I can get the interior gelcoat finish clean with some light sanding, should I then paint it with something, if so any ideas what? If that becomes an option, what non-toxic sealant can I use between then base and the lid before I rivet it back together?
I have searched thru the forum, and in the most cases a flexible tank is recommended, as expected, and that suites most of those application, but its not an option for us. There was a post that mentioned using 'Antel water based Epoxy Coating'.
