So if the boat is in Portugal and the policy holder is in Portugal then the risk is in Portugal, so a Portuguese insurer should be able to insure it. Even though the boat is UK registered. Or do I misunderstand you.
Hi Greeny,
My post above seems to confirm.

UK flagged boat based in Spain, me UK citizen resident in Switzerland. UK broker said they couldn't renew a few years ago so I changed to Pantaenius who are more than happy to oblige.

Apologies for the thread drift... The above was quite timely for me as my renewal is due next week and I've been meaning to try Pantaenius due to the good feedback here on YBW. I dutifully filled out the online form and subsequently received a request for a further multi page PDF form to be completed (necessitating moving PCs or printing/scanning) and photos of yacht in order to get a quote. This seemed to me to be a little OTT and, short of time, I pinged a quick (and polite) reply back asking if I could provide said info if/when I wished to proceed following receipt of a ballpark premium figure first. I also confirmed that I had a good survey only 3 years ago. Reply came back, no, I need to fill out the form and, I quote, "We will therefore be closing your request. Our apologies that we are unable to assist on this occasion and in the meantime we wish you good sailing."! Wow! What service! I shan't be pursuing further!

To answer both of the above, it was the UK south coast office, and it was simply lack of time today together with the fact that other insurers seem to be able to quote without a full 'proposal' type form. Oh well, never mind!

Presumably there'll be restrictions imposed by insurers on where we can sail. A couple of ships have been sunk.

That ship has sunk. The whole northern Black Sea has been declared a ‘warlike operations areas’ and the Joint War Committee has already been designated a war area, meaning additional war risk premiums for calls in the region are already in place.
