Hi all, back into sailing with another boat after an absence. I previously used a company called Yyachts for my insurance for a number of years found then to be very good when I made a large claim I believe they no longer exist. Is there any recommendations for insurance cover from businesses who can deal with a claim effectively.
Thanks

Their book was taken over by Topsail, but they are a broker and offer policies from a range of insurers. I switched from them to GJW who have a good reputation for claims handling. No direct experience as like most I have never claimed anything. in general don't think there is much to choose between insurers on the claims front - when there are problems it is because there are, usually in maters of fact related to the nature of the cover so important to read the policy carefully to ensure it xovers what you want. Not all policies are the same.

Good experience from Pantaenius (one major claim) - We have operated with Pantaenius Germany although our boat is in Northern Baltic. No knowledge with Pantaenius-UK, but I am tempted to believe their claims handling is a global process, irrespective of man-made boundaries.

I changed from Y to GJW. Have had to make a claim and they were superb.

Highly recommend GJW.

We were with Y, but changed to Porthcawl. Very happy, they know their stuff and are happy to discuss anything with you. Very competitive premium.
I've just tried Porthcawl myself, but unfortunately my 6 year old survey is too old apparently! Boat is of 1987 vintage.

GJW!!. Excellent in every way. Can log in make changes. Great with claims. Not expensive either. Possibly the clearest and best insurance I’ve ever used. 5 stars!!

GJW very good apart from their 18 hour single handed rule and no further offshore than 12 nm unless 'on passage'.

Now with Pantaenius turned out cheaper as they included dinghy and outboard, and a huge cruising area.

My quote from Pantaenious for my (little) new boat is very reasonable. Pleasant exchanges with the agent in Monaco.
I used our house people, Axa, for my older boat. The premium went up 5X in about 10 yrs, along with way past inflation rises on our house. Not getting any reaction from notes, and no longer a local agent, I went to the nearest agent and asked what was going on. Her reaction was so rude, I cancelled everything (not easy in France) and moved to another outfit, with a local agent. Much cheaper and just creeps up a little each year.
BTW, here, insurance is not optional. You have to insure your car (even if it is an old banger in the barn, not used) house, boat and just about everything else you touch.
I have yet to claim on any policy (touch a bit of teak!) so I am their dream client.

I found Pantaenius very expensive and have changed to Allianz, through Visicover which is a broker. Visicover is all online and you can choose details to suit personal circumstances and see the effect on premiums.

If it's a cheap boat you just have to shop around and, when you have good quote, Google the company to see if there are any outstanding problems.
Recently Pantaenius wanted a outrageous 8% of insured value on a low value boat. Haven Knox Johnson took it on for less than half with no survey and without the pre-conditions laid down by Pants.

All risk personal claims performance is another matter (as are detail Terms and Conditions) but for a cheap boat, not perhaps the pressing worry it is on something worth 50k.
