After years of painfully fully restoring a 34 year old 18 foot pocket cruiser (on a shoestrting), I cant seem to get an insurance quotes, where do you old gaffers get your insaurance ? or others who sail old wooden boats.

I've got an all wood 1966 Golden Hind and found the best quote plus terms & conditions has been Haven Knox Johnson whom I've used for several years now. I did provide a full survey report when I bought the boat and they might insist on this, however they do not require a re-survey every 5 years like other most insurers. Most importantly, they have been outstanding regarding a claim.

You will almost certainly have to get an 'Insurance Survey' and they will quote you.

Try GJW Direct 0500 141141
SAGA 0800 015 3360
KC Powell 01702 470035 (who I use)
Newton Crum 01424 718800
Nautical Insurance Services 01702 470811
Colin Curtis 01752 664649
www.craftinsure.com

These are in the back of ST(I've just insured an enterprise with craftinsure)
Traffords Ltd 0870 9000 331
Bishop Skinner 0800 783 8057

I use K C Powell for a 32 year old gpr boat and they seem very reasonable. All other insurers were difficult about sailing solo. The blokes you talk to are sailors (maybe motorboaters) and know what they are talking about and know about the practical problems that we encounter in real life...like we dont want a full structural survey just to get insurance. Good luck. Paul
