Injectors - ever had yours checked / tested?

Had all 12 injectors overhauled for my 2x TAMD61a a few years ago. Approx 2800 hrs on the engines, all tips replaced and springs/shims replaced and injectors calibrated.

Cost just over £800 from Thames valley electro diesel in reading (Bosch main agent).

Made precisely no difference to the performance of the engines, but pleased I had it done as ongoing maintenance. For me, it was a one off job on a boat I’ve owned for over 10 years with aging engines.

A/C units looks like a very nice system Pete 16k btu's should be more than enough to keep you cool in all compartments
Where is the unit sited @ 800mm wide ?
I wouldn't worry about not running it up for a while..

It's under the forward berth which was virtually wasted space as removing the mattress in such a small cabin is very difficult.

My service manual states that injectors should be checked and replaced after every 400hrs or 2 years. but my mechanic completely disagrees so i have never had cause to check mine since my engine starts on first attempt and runs smooth, if i ever suspect that one of them might be getting old and acting up i will just change them ALL. From what i gather my Nanni engine uses exactly the same injectors like the toyota landcruiser/Hilux 1-KZ engine series (turbodiesel R4 3.0 l. (2982 cm³) ),
These cost just 175 pounds on ebay for a set of 4 .
That is probably cheaper that sending the old ones in to be tested and cleaned.

update mine are now back.

None were bad and none needed new tips, but they all needed slight adjustment. Shows 1000 hours is about right for the old mechanical injectors.
Tappets done, didn't need much either.
New, bigger air filters fitted as Col says the non volvo Fram ones I'd fitted were too small. He fitted Fhuge things!
Fluids filters and impellers all done.
Engines as sweet as anything now ready for the next 1000 hours.

I need to get my KAD43 injectors checked out.
Is there anything special about marine injectors or can I just go to an automotive injector company of which we have many in Brum
Not overkeen on sending £1000 of injectors in the post.
Any diesel injection specialist should be quite capable of testing and resetting or servicing the injectors. The tests are basically: Seat tightness; Lift Pressure and Spray pattern.

A couple of years ago I found firm in Warwick who offered to test them free, but any repairs would be chargeable. Poole Diesel also tested some from a previous boat free. That was after 1500 hours and all were fine.

Is it REALLY necessary? Cars, and particularly trucks don't seem to need there injectors overhauling for many (hundreds) of hours.

I,ve wondered that too ?
One partial explanation ( sure there are others ) is that in marine designation the same block using your truck analogy is only 1/2 the Hp and because of the gears etc it's not all delivered for hours on end .Cylinder temps / pressures are lower ,or rarely particularly high ,due to gears and intermittent tick over .

So just imagine a MAN cement mixer delivering a load to a site say to build the shard in SE1 , from Kent 60 miles away in 12.8 L but 380 or 430 Hp truck , working the gearbox , traffic lights etc ,then ticking over , switched off @ site waiting to unload ,then hitting rush hr and M 25 woes near Gatwick on return to depot .
Then imagine mine same block @ 700 Hp 15 y old or a brand new one even more Hp 800 or 900 Hp
Running to Corsica mid season slightly fouled north of 1800 rpm . for 3 hrs ,then 1 hrs rest ( refuel top up ) then another 3 hrs to Italy .
There will be a considerable difference in cylinder pressure and exhaust gas temps between the marine version and road .
This may lead to heat unduced injector tip wear / damage that the cooler running road version is literally 1 million miles away .
The spray pattern on a 800 Hp variant may be more critical than a 380 Hp variant .

Happy to hear any bodies else's view ?
