Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Fantastic boat and post, thanks for sharing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fish do seam to gather around the lights at night and the blue ones give a tropical feel , I would be interested if different colours attract different fish ????

Your helm seats are my personal favourite modification, a secure seat keeps the family happy in rougher conditions, although I wish you calm waters and a cracking season to enjoy your boat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

but what are the underwater lights for? Do they have have a function

[/ QUOTE ]Not when mounted astern afaik (maybe for fishes as already said, 'dunno).
But you can also mount them under the hull, facing forward/laterally.
Which can indeed help at night, when cruising in very shallow waters, or to check the anchor deployment.
For instance, I used to cruise some areas around Croatian islands where swmbo helmed while I went at the bow looking at the bottom, 'cause the sounder alone wasn't just good enough. Obviously, I would have never dared to do the same tight passages at night.
In such situation, I'd expect u/w lights arranged as above to give a bottom view even better than in daylight.

Multi coloured flashing underwater lights, you absolute tart!

The boat looks fab, and all the improvements you've made or are making will make it even better.

I can see i'm gonna have to raise my game to compete, now where can I buy after-burners for Volvo D12's?

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Yep, the lights attract the fish. My neighbour when I was in the old port had blue u/w lights, and when he switched them on dozens of Grey Mullet would gather and try to pucker up to the light. As we were on the road to the Superyachts/beach there was a constant flow of tourists, who would all gather at the back of his boat to watch the fish.

I don't know if they would attract other fish out at anchor, I think there's only Mullet in the port anyway.

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Yep all agreed, though personally I wouldn't be happy fitting lights to a GRP planing 30knot boat anywhere except the transom. The pounding forces when going fast in waves are massive and I would be concerned about failure of a lamp = hole in boat. Perhaps I'm being too cautious but I'd study very carefully how the lamps are constructed. Fine in a displacement 12kt boat.

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Ooh thanks Wakeup. That's perfect for the cockpit - I'll get the doored version! In the galley I'm just going to mount it on inside of a cupboard door, easy peasy

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

"Absolute tart". Fantastic compliment - thanks!

These Volvo D12 800s seem a bit of a gimmick, compared with the 715s. I had a seatrial and this boat did 33kts at 2350rpm, which is EXACTLY the same as my 715hp old boat did when it was new. So the extra HP (they're actually 775hp, and merely badged "800") is unnoticable.

They tell me they are more fuel efficient, slightly. I'll report back on that later. And they have different shaped rocker cover (has a hump in it) but I don't know what engineering mod is placed under there

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Don't most engines need a good few hours to loosen up before reaching peak power, or is that a bit outdated now?

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Dunno really. This boat has 30hours tho, and did when i sea trialed it, becuase it did EBY-SIBS-EBY in September. So they should have been loose enuf I wuda thort

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Good point. But I've seen, already a few years ago btw, a damn fast boat (C&B) mooring at night with an u/w light turned on under the hull (just to show off, mind - it was in a marina, so no need for the light at all).
The day after, I was told by someone in the marina (couldn't check first hand with the owner, though, because he already left) that the light was fitted just a few inches behind the high speed fairing block of the transducer, exactly for that reason.

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Ah right, yeh, still 33 knots is pretty good, I don't think i've had better than 31 in the Princess.

[/ QUOTE ]Aren't those engines rated for 2300? Sounds as if they could handle slightly higher pitch props, whilst they probably fitted the same ones as in the 715hp boat...

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Seeing as you're an owner who takes a keen interest in your boat and its performance. Would you mind if I asked your opinion on the propulsion side we deal with either openly on the forum or privately?

Thanks
Neil

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Good point mapis, and I have been wondering if they used the same props or if they tweaked them. I wansn't being precise with the 23050 - it might have been 2300. I'll check when we do full seatrials next month. Also I have the teignbridge spec sheet (individual sign off, per prop) for both old and new boats and I'll see if there is a difference

Mind you if the error was as small as 50rpm I doubt I would bother doing any correction!

I'll be pleased if the mpg improves though - long ranges are nice. I want to do Mallorca this summer and can do that in a one-er from Antibes with careful fuel management

Re: \"In build\", sort of, pics of Sq58 - long/lots pics

Feel free to ask, openly on forum is fine

I have looked at your shaft gizmo and like the concept. But part of me thinks it's a solution to a problem I dont have but I haven't studied it closely (mainly due to preoccupation with more urgent boat mods right now!). If the mpg improvement is say 15% then it becomes worth it, cos that's 100nm extra range for me. Also it is a major engineering mod, not something I can rip out easily, so I'd want to be very confident that the installers do a good job. And like many others, I have had jobs done on my boats where I have strongly disliked the engineering/install quality and have ripped it out and re-done it, but I can't do that with shafts!

On my current set up the thrust goes to gearbox and engine mounts. Engineeringwise that causes me no issues: the bearings can take it and I don't get excessive noise. On your seatorque the thrust is taken on a thrust bearer - that surely means GRP work to created that thrust bearing point in the boat? I also have no appreciable P bracket bearing wear in 800hrs (in silt free water of course) so that's not a probem I want to fix

But fire away with sales pitch please, I'm genuinely very interested to hear and I think others are too
