The cra p spouted by Steve Kendall

What a condensing pile of rubbish spouted about the transfer:-

" As a condition of the sale, Chelsea warranted that they would adhere to the Data Protection Act and can only use the personal information passed to them in accordance with the terms under which it was originally collected from members - these can be viewed under the privacy statements at the foot of the forum homepage."

The privacy statement that IPC have totally ignored -- so why should Chelsea be any different ?????

What the devil is that supposed to mean ?
----------------------------------------------
"Following the transfer to Chelsea, if you no longer wish to be a member of the Classic Boat Forum you can opt out by emailing oliver@chelseamagazines.com with “Opt Out” in the subject line"

Personally I think we should all opt out now as a show of contempt for the action taken with out consent, ( by all means sign up with Chelsea if you so wish after all it should be your choice !!)
-------------------------------------------------
"We expect the transfer to take place in the coming days."

Still no request for consent !!

For those that think I am going over the top just think --- this is the thin end of the wedge and if allowed to take place without complaint - what next ? just ask the Germans about that !

Cunning plan?

Let's pretend...

IPC sells CB the membership list of the Classic forum - potentially 55554 members (according to the membership count of the fora) and all the stuff posted by whomsoever posted on the Classic Forum for £lotsawonga + VAT
Said members revolt and refuse to go to the new site - lets face it, some of them can be a little awkward (as has been found by the various moderators over the years)

With me so far?

New forum is a "johnny-no-mates" and IPC offer to buy it back from liquidators for £10 + VAT

Kerching. Job done. Promotion for the people involved in the cunning stunt. (did I get that right?)

NB Any resemblance to any real or imagined scenario which might, or might not, be playing out is purely coincidental and any comment which might, or might not be made by the writer is made while he was asleep and he thus cannot be sued.

Agreed!

I've also seen a suggestion of a different take on the IP situation, which I hadn't previously considered. IPC can't sell the material, which it doesn't own, but it does own various rights in the material, as we know. It may be able to sell the rights, as distinct from the material itself. Not sure. Did warn you I'm not an expert :)

Well being well known for posting loads of drivel anyway, I seem to have found a loophole in the system here, which allows me to edit any post made since I started posting drivel

Don't be silly. Trying any kind of "direct action" on a server on which your "opponent" is effectively God is unlikely ever to achieve anything except waste your time and possibly confuse other readers.

And at the end of the day, it really isn't that big a deal (although possibly useful as a lesson in public relations in online communities :) )

I really hadn't intended to get involved in this slangfest, tempting though it was and entertaining though it has been, but in view of to repeated calls for the OP to say something, I feel it only courteous to observe:
A: The OP is currently out of the country (Antigua, poor chap. Well, someone's got to do it)
B: The original posting was a kindly-meant attempt to keep people informed of what was happening, or about to.
C: It was posted from someone who, as a Classic Boat staffer now has nothing to do with IPC and cannot speak for them, or therefore tell you much beyond the original posting about what's happening. Richard Shead stepped in on IPC's behalf, but now also seems to have left the country, or at least the building, and now Natalie's put up a sticky with the official version.

All I would add is that if you do choose to follow the forum over to the new classicboat.co.uk site you will be very welcome, and free (subject to the usual T&Cs) to make of it what you will.

For those of you that don't want your posts to be moved to the new forum you could search the classics forum for all your posts and systematically delete them.

I am not too bothered about the new Classic Boat Magazine and it's owners setting up a new forum with a BLANK PAGE and a permanent invite link to join could be put on the YBW forum header page they are welcome to and I will probably go and have a look, may even join it.
BUT WHAT I DON'T WANT IS TO LOSE THIS FORUM FROM THIS WEB SITE AND ALL THE POSTED INFO THAT IS ON HERE TO SOMEWHERE ELSE.Why can't IPC just leave it under their OWN NEW NAME on here as it is.

Yes that is one way but why do that on here.
If they do move them in total then over to the new forum and then delete the lot.:D
Bet the new one has a blocker in to stop you from pulling em.:eek:

Think about it. If the new owners have bought the rights to the forum that may include the existing search engine awareness that the forum has. Someone Googling classic boat issues will be given the YBW page. So there may be a redirect to the new Classic Boat forum. In that case the old forum can't really sit on here. IPC would be pinching visitor traffic that Calssic Boat have paid for.

You can go and look at it on it's new servers (which may be faster) so what is the big deal.

Stuff and nonsense.

Forum stutter LS?

Apart from that, I really can't see what people are getting so heated about.

Some matter of principle, that is of absolutely no consequence to any of us as forum posters. We sign up to licence IPC to do what they will with our ramblings. They have signed up to a deal that involves transferring that same licence to another publisher - big deal. Yes, I know the small print doesn't cover this exact situation, but I (as no expert) would expect any court to consider it a reasonable interpretation.

On the issue of personal privacy - first of all they don't keep much "personal" data on us, and whetever gives people the idea that the new owners will be any more careless with our email addresses than IPC were. All this stuff about kiddieporn spam is just paranoid scaremongering.

The only thing I am dissapointed about is the loss of archive posts from these forums (as I am very unlikely to make use of the new one), but I accept that that is part of the package (for reasons explained by LS, and others) and there is nothing likely to be done about it.

All this whinging is bad for your blood pressure, and only likely to result in slapped wrists from the mods:)
