I\'m still worried about my Muffler

If all goes according to plan, from the end of March until late autumn my boat will be sat in lovely warm Mediterranean seawater.

The thing is, my boat is raw water cooled through an Alpha 1 leg so unless I can flush it in the water it will have salt water sat in it all through the season. (Glad I thought of this because I haven't had anything to worry about re the boat for almost a week now!)

So am I right to be worried?
Can I use my muffler underwater (oooh matron....)?
Will my engine / leg life be reduced?
Do I need to approach SWMBO for Cap Ex approval to install a closed cooling system ("It will make the calorifier work darling...)

Or should I take Martyn Whiteleys advice and just leave to to corrode quickly and pay for him and Tico to come out and fit me an old Vauxhall Frontera diesel engine (with liberal quantities of vaseline applied to marinise it) thereby slashing my running costs to the point where the fuel companies pay me and I find myself featured in the "Custom Yachting" section of MBY ("How I saw the light with my diesel conversion and why petrol engines are crap by MedDreamer)

Thank Martin
If you distract H1 by posting a query about "GPS or Charts", Martyn could nick the engine from his frontera!!!!

Re: I\'m still worried about my Muffler

I have used my muffs when the boats is in the water (Mercruiser with Bravo 2 leg, Petrol and proud of it), mainly when flushing out prior to filling up with antifreeze for the winter with no problems, raw water cooled

Many boats are raw water cooled with salt water, even those that have closed water system rely on sea water to cool them.

What's a muffler? Sounds like a scarf or one of those cute things you hang around your neck to keep your hands warm

Re: I\'m still worried about my Muffler

Martyn,

I'm not the world's leading expert on this, but our boat sat in murky, cold - but still salt - seawater from April - end of October last year, with her Alpha 1 permanently dunked. Reading the engine manual caused an outbreak of hysteria on my part (like you, I have to have something boaty to worry about) because it talks of flushing the system through with fresh water every time you run the engine. Putting this hysteria aside, I'd guess the answer is that things won't last as long if they are in salt - as they would if in freshwater and that you might therefore improve things by flushing through after every trip.

However, I have to say that there are quite a lot of boats down in the yard at the moment, some of which have quite old Mercruiser/Alpha 1 set ups, and that they seem to be surviving reasonably well, all things considered. Also that, presumably, Mr Mercruiser designed his engine being mindful of the fact that some boats end up in the sea occasionally.

Personally I am going to turn a blind eye to the salt menace and sell the boat on before everything corrodes away /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

The Salt Away product is not available in UK at the moment the nearest dealer is Ireland, they will post, it may be an opportunity for a dealer to start stocking it or even for Dom to add it to the Soloy stable.
