Definetely worth booking ahead. In practical terms, as you enter the basin there is alongside visitor berthing on your starboard side which would accommodate larger boats, but you can be sure of having to raft, which is fine. Lovely place, I was there last summer.

We are similar size. We picked up a bouy outside - much more peacefull, and we could come and go as we pleased. The port area is a delight - once you forget the ghosts of Papillon and the other prsoners.

It's wort exploring the rest of the island as well - beautifully desolate as you go north.

We went there 2 years ago - they wouldnt let us into the marina (multihull) and directed us straight ahead into the fishing harbour. There we dried out on clean mud right in the centre of the town. No charge, and way more pleasant than the marina which became so crowded that you could walk end to end and side to side over boats. It was bedlam when boats went in and the same coming out, with quite a bit of bumping.

Recommend you either go into the fishing harbour or anchor off. The marina is too crowded to be pleasant, and the pontoon at the entrance is exposed and bounced around by wash.

Incidentally, for anyone reading this, this was the only time in 8 years all round UK France and Spain that we have ever been refused entrance because we sail a cat. The irony was we were half way through the lock entrance when the HM saw us and started waving his arms about, so it wasnt a size issue.

There are about 2 berths for a yacht that size in the marina. The max length quoted is 16m.

the only doubt I have is whether you'll be able to get through the lock gates - check - the no is 0033 546 09 26 69.

By the way it's quite easily the most expensive marina in the la Rochelle area, though I did have a free (and involuntary) jazz concert last time I was there and the showers were thrown in for free.

What's your draft - there are several other, cheaper and more pleasant marinas on the island.
