Hi everyone

Many thanks for all the help received so far, very much appreciated.

I have now stripped all wiring and intend to start from scratch! As a novice I cannot seem to work out the ignition relationship to the main wiring?

Basic setup really - I have a Mariner outboard, single battery, and a Quicksilver control unit with key ignition. I have attached a rough diagram of how I think it should be set up however as a complete novice with marine/automotive wiring I am unsure what is the correct way to install the basics?

Any help would be gratefully received and thanks for looking

You dont give any clue as to the identity, HP or age of the outboard.

Usually with modern outboards the ignition system is independent of the " main " electrical system.

Coil and points in older models, cdi in most since mid '70s

The "main" electrics will be powered by a separate coil plus rectifier, and maybe regulator, to charge the battery the primary purpose of which is often to supply power for electric starting and in large models powered tilt and trim

You may find a workshop manual that covers your model and some wiring diagrams on the Boatinfo website at http://162.144.28.33/
Alternatively there may be a Seloc manual avaialble

Thank you for the reply.

Its a 40hp Mariner and seems to be around 10/15 yrs old (maybe older!)

IIRC there look to be only a positive and negative (4guage?) wires from the outboard.

They are almost certainly the battery connections but if you have a remote ignition switch there will also be provision to connect the wiring for that

In addition to the service manual in my earlier link you should be able to locate and down load an owners manual from the Brunswick Marine download centre. It is not always easy to find the right manual but it will be there somewhere. Sometimes better not to specify a year and browse the entire list
