icom - poor service

Hmmmm my Icom M31 battery terminals have corroded twice. I posted a thread about it recently. I've found a work around, but less than impressed with this marine ne radios lack of corrosion resistance. I think Horizon come out of this looking good, and Icom... ....not so much...
 
Can anybody tell me were I can buy a charging lead for one of my iCom handhelds and get the squelch sorted on my other?
 
I approached ICOM about an old M31 that stopped receiving. I was told to send it in and a few days later I received a working radio free of charge. Cannot fault their customer service and would buy ICOM again in future.

No it’s not, cables are part of the system many are specific to that equipment imagine buying a toaster and being told that you need a 6 pin din with three key ways to use. That is the state of many boat electronics.

The bad customer service was of his own making when Icom told him they don't sell cables he should have said "Thanks for that I'll buy the cable somewhere else". Instead he kept going.

Yes I read the OP. It’s about icom customer service and that includes that which is needed to replace icom cables. He shouldn’t need to go elsewhere.

So, where do you go for Icom cables, Raymarine cables, Garmin cables etc ? The vast majority of marine electronics cables are unique to the equipment.

It's a bit like buying something that needs a component that is unique to the product, then being told the component isn't available separately.

There is no need for analogies, it's pretty simple, the DSC element of the radio will not function without GPS data, that data is received via an Icom cable, supplied with new radios. It should therefore be a spare part available from Icom.

But the part will vary depending on what you connect to and how far away it is. Icom use connectors which are easy to source.

It's an NMEA data and external speaker cable, it doesn't have a connecor on the other end, for reasons you quote. But, neither do any other companies data cables. I can readily buy cables off the shelf for any other bit of electronics i have ever come across (unless very old and obsolete).

Followed by a complaint about the outrageous price of accessories bought from the radio people, and recommending everybody buys elsewhere?

All VHF radio cables are standard the Raymarine VHF one is an example: https://www.westmarine.com/WestAdvisor/Coaxial-Cable. All other electronics such a chart plotters are also standard but all are different from each other.

OK, so you're just trolling again.

Icom have hitherto enjoyed a good reputation for customer service, but I'd certainly second the suggestion that the OP contacts them and asks for an explanation of what happened here. If their attitude has truly changed - as for example Simrad's did - then that is certainly worth knowing.
