I think she\'s pi$$ed!

my boat, (Jeanneau SO), is heeling to port. she does it all the time, about 5 degrees, I reckon - enough that it's noticeable.
I cannot understand it: the fuel and water tanks are equally distributed, as, I think, is everything else. The only thing on the port side that does not have an opposing weight to starboard is the inflatable dinghy, which is packed away in the aft cabin. Surely this couldn't be it, could it?

Many thanks
Russell

to starboard, and no holding tank!

To Port:
Fuel tank and 3 batteries
Nav station including hefty Greek Waters Pilot
Galley

To Starboard:
Water tank
Heads
Dining table and sofas

Stumped,
Russell

Did you check this using

the rig or the waterline? First thing would be sure the mast is upright. Tie a loop in a halyard and lower it until the loop is just below the gun'l, climb over the rail and stand in it outside off the boat at the shrouds. Get a crewmember to put tape at gun'l level, then repeat on the other side of the boat.

If the mast is upright, may also be useful to check at the waterline.

Earlier this year I commissioned a 58' Tayana which needed to have 1 tonne of lead installed on the starboard side to compensate for the list partially caused by the gen-set on the port side. Tayana would not believe us and actually sent their people to see it and eventually do the work.

Haven't grounded in a rough sea have you?

Has the keel been fitted properly, ie, is it in the middle of the boat and does it hang straight. measure it from the tow rail on each side to the top and to the bottom, but check the ideas in the other posts first as they are easy to check.

Re: Did you check this using

well, there have been lots of good suggestions.
I ought to have checked the mast alignment before posting, but thanks, I'll do that this evening. I'll go diving at the weekend, too, to check keel alignment.

the boat is a 1995 Sun Odyssey 33.1; she's not been grounded while I have had her. do you ask to see if it's possible that the keel is misplaced, or could a grounding cause another problem?

thanks very much for the advice.

G'day Russell,

Next time you notice a list, try turning the boat around and see if it has changed, may well be wind on mast and tide on keel causing the list.

Hope this helps. . . . .
