I think I\'m gonna do it

I have conciously made the decision to do a complete engine and leg change, I will need to do it as economically as possible, given that i have spent so much already, i don't want to over capitalise the boat,as i will end up losing more hard earned !! I have found a Mermaid Majestic 180hp turbo diesel that fits my budget, What would be the best outdrive? and what else will i require? i.e c.v joints engine mounts etc.Any particular pitfalls to look out for ??
thanks in advance

Re: I think I\'m gonna do it

Is this a straight 6, or the 4 cyl ?

Seem to recall that the straight 6 was quite heavy ...

Also if you are considering changing the lot, with transom changes anyway, would you not evaluate a surface drive alongside the traditional? Lancing does one that seems quite reasonable...

Which is bound to be more reasonable for maintenance than sterndrive... But then again completely understand if considered too radical.

Whoa there boy!!!
The mermaid is only AFAIK only suitable for shafts...... hell of a big change from legs in terms of work.

I'll say it again...... Talk to Mike at Lancing about the Puma and try Coastal rides for a S/H 290 leg.
Of course if you go the whole hog you might get a deal on a new engine / leg combo.
Give me a ring

Or speak to Mermaid on 01202 891824. They do fit some of their engines onto outdrives, so it may be possible.

what second hand options ??

Hi Phil
i know you have advised me to do this in the past, but the price is prohibitive. The boat doesn't warrant having £5500 + leg spent on it so i am looking at second hand options, which they don't do ,or so i was told. So i am looking around at possibilities. What sort of diesel will marry up to an outdrive without to much re-engineering, the criteria being the price, so really what i was asking was, what are the options ?? what engine + what outdrive, I would like 130hp plus if possible, that way i will retain some performance without turning it into a displacement speed hulk

Julian,

Paul at Coastal Rides would be worth a call for a cheapish s/h Volvo engine/drive in 30/31 guise.

Also check out Westend Marine in Wakefield, he sometimes has similar units in. Think it's westendmarine.co.uk.

(Sure it's not worth fitting a D1.7!)

Re: I think I\'m gonna do it

If the mermaid is a 6 banger is dover block, or if later maybe Ottesan the engine from Turkey, dover will be a bit smokey but bomb proof, if it is the 6 pot then its 5.9 litre and 600 kgs ish, which is bloody heavy, cant help with the weight of the 4 banger but a mate of mine had a pair of four banger 200 mermaids and I always thought they never seemed very pokey.

Get a Cummins 4BTA, its a 3.9 litre four pot turbo aftercooled B series, pulls 3000 rpm and is a whopping 250 GeeGee's all for 450 kgs...most pokey four pot on the market, I have a contact that might be able to do you a good deal.

<hr width=100% size=1>Sod the Healey - I think I'll buy an E-Type.

Hi Martyn,

Thought you must be selling filter tips in Magaluf by now.

How's that for timing, our posts crossed!

So much of a coincidence I had even changed to an appropriate logo earlier this am.!

I preferred your other logo!

You are becoming the forum expert on diesel conversion.

Believe it or not I have been working hard recently and have only been an infrequent visitor on here. I will PM you or give you a ring to arrange a get together.
