I have to put my hands up and admit to being a complete prat

Re: I have to put my hands up . . .

you also might like to consider that i am holed up in a different country, strange port, ......Hoping someone is coming to look at the boat.....and alone....

what i really dont need right now is snide comments from a prat like you....we better not meet in the next few weeks...

Doug thanks for the post. I think it's fairly brave of you to make this admission and it does help others to think about potential problems.
Please don't take any notice of Malaprop, he is just a very sad and maladjusted person who never has anything useful to say. He is the only forumitite that I have ever met who I detested on sight. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Doug, spoke to Karen and she said you were stuck in Belgium and had water in your fuel!! Strange I thought!!
Well at least I can have a pop at you when you mention my sinking, propeller loss etc ( Ill not go on)
Good luck and hope you get back soon
Think you should change your name from Dave to Rodney!!

It's about as stupid as one of my "tricks".

Prior to taking boating pal's wife for her first trip in our "new" boat I checked and cleaned the raw water strainer and got chatting to someone on the quayside.
Honoured passenger arrived and off we went down the estuary. Got about 200yds and smelt a strange smell soon followed by overheating alarm.
Opened hatch to discover about 4ins of water in the bilge and steam billowing about. Stopped engine and called out "don't panic, we're sinking" - passenger not impressed

I then calmly replaced the strainer cover /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Of course it's an accident. It could only be negligent if he had noticed the cap was off, and decided to risk it, or if checking the fuel caps before setting off was a widely recognised procedure, which it isn't. Should be a fairly straight forward insurance claim.

If I were writing that Ins claim, I think I might say I had put the cap back on, but it apparently hadn't fastened properly . . . /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Poo happens.

so no option but a MAYDAY.

[/ QUOTE ]

Dougie, why no option but a Mayday? Were you in grave and imminent danger? Where you about to be run over by a tanker, where you on fire, where you drifting towards rocks, where you sinking?

Why not a Pan Pan?

D3B You absolute Plonker.
Well--- as an Everton fan I gotta say that!

Anyway as an experienced Boater and Commercially endorsed Skipper type person I can tell You I have never put a foot wrong on the water.

Cept last year in Oostende driving a Cat to an Oilpipe laying Vessel.

Oh as well last year, I drove Me Mobo off the Pontoon with Leccy attached!
Whilst peeps I had Taught/ Instructed fell about laughing /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Not saying what I did in Oostende /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

As me Mate Searush says--- Poo happens.
Hope You get back OK and loose the Cup Final /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

David

there were quite a few ships about and i had no means of going anywhere other than with the tide......i was about ten miles offshore and not far from the TSS..both engines had failed /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If I recall my instrcutor he said it was better to issue a mayday and let coastguard downgrade it to pan pan

The moments just after your boat engines die, in sloppy conditions, are, to say the least, interesting.
Your reactions are usually related to your level of experience in similar situations.
The average recreational boater will not have the opportunity to be exposed to the multitude of potential senarios that are in our playground.
You would need to be at sea professionally, in similar vessels, even then you wouldn't cover them all. Its just won't happen for the average punter, and they probably wouldn't want to do it anyway. Therefore situations are going to arise. Its admirable that D3B has put his situation up for review, for others to learn from, and has clearly got a lot of friends.

To critisize D3B (MaliciousProp), and the general forum response, shows the persons unrealistic grasp on reality.
His constant snide remarks are to be pitied, as a person who craves attention anyway he can get it.

As I think Kwackers is implying, we all make mistakes it all part of the learning curve. If you haven't, you are either a liar or your haven't been anywhere! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
