My son was born on 18th April 1989, and I bought Padiwak, my Corribee 2 weeks before he was born. That is this weekend.
I only realised that with an answer to another thread on PBO. I spent the time before he was born finishing off the nursery, and tidying up the boat, getting a newish Evinrude 6hp, all the wet gear, safety gear, geargear, in fact, just more gear.
My first trip was with the ex owner and the 2 lads.
We went out on the boat, en famille, 3 weeks afer he was born.
We were bidding on a Southerly 105 as a first boat, but it had Osmosis, and the owner wouldn't talk about a price adjustment, so we bought the Corribee to get going. With hindsight, a very wise move, much cheaper to damage.
We holidayed for a couple of weeks on Padiwak, with 2 extra kids as well. 5 on a Corribee.Hmm.
Within 3 months I had been lovestruck with the Evolution 25, and we holidayed some more on that with our first trip out of the Roach/Crouch to Bradwell, across the Ray (we were in company). 3 stormy days later, up to Levington, then home.

Looking back, not much has changed, Depth, Log, paper charts, Mk 1 eyeball and a healthy dose of fear.

My mooring was in the Middleway, and I joined Great Wakering YC. I had 1 hour either side if I was lucky, but it was only 30 quid I think, for the year.

I felt like a King, and 21ft seemed like a lot of boat, compared to my Mirror and Minisail.

I envy you the long experience of boats. It is 9 years for me with no previous boating at all unless you count a blow-up dinghy off the beach when I was nine /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Jim, dunno if you've seen ST this month (May issue), there's an article by young Jack Daly about his Padiwak trip round Britain.
Saw him the other day, he's now sold her (but I don't know where she's going) and bought an old Maurice Griffiths design altho I failed to ask him what she is. Been laid up at Faversham for quite a few years.

Yes, young Jack came onto this forum and I responded, and even offered a bit of assistance. I didn't hear back, but I read his exploits here also.

Also the 20th aniversary of me joining Cambs plod this year, 1989, ah what a year. Fell ill with gastroentiritus at plod college, that turned to classic full blown pneumonia and they rushed me off to hospital, blue light ambulance job. Stuck in an isolation room because they didn't know what it was until the x ray man arrived. Quick zap and a rush job to process the film showed only a small bit of lung still in use.
Big bad doctor man stuck the biggest needle I had ever seen, straight into a vein, and they gave me drugs that made me have halucinations before it started working. Got them even more worried when I came off oxygen and asked for my pipe ( yes, pipe, I also used to smoke one of them ) which was totally stupid because I could have kicked the habit during that time.
Ah yes, what a wonderful year 89 was /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On the boat side, am I the only one on here that went for an over 20ft job first ? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
The mobo is 25ft but only really used that on a river

If we are going for anniversaries then it will be 20 years since I left the RN in Sept. My eldest was born just before I left having given 13 months notice - perfect planning really no job, wife on maternity leave and new baby!

First job I found was at Tilbury Docks as a 'Superintendent' just after the abolition of the National Dock Labour Scheme (interesting times!) and that brought us to the East from Hampshire, thank goodness as otherwise I'd be trying to afford sailing in the Solent!!
