Yes "Dead Calm" simply brilliant.
Some here will vouch for "The Riddle of the Sands" but I can't stand Jenny Agutter accent.

To be honest I avoid ‘sailing’ films if I can, they almost always include some form of disaster and ‘nasty’ . As it is I find I can conjure up enough ‘nasties’ whilst I’m sitting alone on watch at 03.00hrs to keep me aware of what can happen at sea without Hollywood giving me any more to worry about.

the book is worth a read imo, ill wait for DVD on the film, The mercy wasnt great - i thought the documentary deep water told the story better - so my expectations are low for Adrift

I've not seen it, but my mum (who was sailing on the yacht in question a few months before the events in the film) enjoyed it and said it was "quite true to life".

Bit "tall shippy " but try Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracey (1937?) superb sailing sequences of Grand Banks Schooners.

tried to watch the more budget Crowhurst last night. what a load of utter crap. the acting was wooden and cringeworthy from the rest of the cast, the Electron didnt look like the real Electron, it didnt show the trouble he had with the construction and preparation of the boat. it also had annoying singing scenes and obnoxious quick cuts of previous scene "trying" to show his madness. its a total failure! avoid! Mercy isnt perfect either but is superior to this.

I enjoyed "The Mercy" and have seen it twice now but this alternative sounds rather grim.

I watched "The Mercy" on a long flight last month.
As a sailor I found it harrowing to watch at times, even though I knew the sad ending.

I'm looking forward to seeing if Emirates will be showing it when I fly with them next month. Read the Guardian review and it said the exact opposite - got inside the character much better than the Mercy although obviously lower budget

I can recommend the book "A race for madmen" which gives much of the detail of the story.
Having seen clips of Crowhurst which highlighted the claustrophic mental agony of the sailor and clips of The Mercy with amercanised slush which linger inaccurately on the happy then confused family rather than the sailor, I look forward to seeing Crowhurst in full when I have time and will avoid The Mercy like the plague.

I thought The Mercy was reasonably good, and I'm glad it wasn't cruel to the man; God knows what persecution he must have inflicted on himself. Deep Water is an excellent documentary, well worth watching. Here's a link to it:

I am in the middle of reading that fascinating book. I wonder if Robin Knox-Johnson would have succeeded if he had been able to get the money for the boat he wanted to have built instead of having to make-do with Suhaili. I like to think he would. Although very different personalities, RKJ and Moitessier seemed to be the best equipped mentally for the voyage.
