I’m not sure it’s possible to relax in the Solent

Like traffic cops on land, the Harbour Patrol is a pain when you're out of line, but, like the traffic cops, they perform a useful function keeping people safe and out of the way of the ferries. I'm glad they're there.

Generally they perform a useful function -sometimes they are perhaps over zealous for example when you have small boats labouring in against tide they might not appreciate a yachtsman’s desire to give such little craft a wide berth etc. certainly applaud their attitude to jetski though and keeping the sailing out of harbour under control etc.

Obviously high summer can be annoying but even yesterday which was a lovely sailing day there really wasn't that many people around and even on fabulous winter days you have the place to yourself. I had my elderly father on the boat for the first time. We nipped across to Osborne bay for lunch and back. Sure I try to be somewhere else during cowes week but having spent most of the past 7 years in Brighton before returning last year I'll say that october to March at least the Solent is fabulous. Isn't most of the stress about parking in a marina anyway?
