Any motorboat builder with a heartbeat, living in todays abundant technological climate needs to explain to a hungry and often sufficiently funded user base why it is that so very little is on offer... especially when moths (I think that's what they're called) go flying impressively around 600mm or so above the water, making us look like the fuel guzzling, wake inducing lard-asses we regrettably are and until we get a choice, are set to remain! Come on Builders: if it's too difficult then say why!

Yes, I remember being impressed with the Moths in Chichester harbor when first being out paced by these things - ok I had to stick to the speed limit and they didn't. The America's Cup machines also work on a similar principle but perhaps have a little more computer control going on.

Yes, it seems the development is being done in USA and Japan. The boats look far more suitable for lakes rather than sea conditions because of ride height. The Shearwater ride height look huge compared with what was on the video clip for obvious reasons. The Bayliner was adjusted to run just clear of the water. It must be far more fuel efficient, but very prone to damage from debris. Few lakes in UK allow the use of high speed boats, so maybe our designers dont consider there may be a market in UK. It certainly looks as though the steps in technology have allowed the theory to be put into practice. Hats off to those guys.

Are any of the old Boeing jet foils still in service anywhere? In the 1970s they were very impressive running between Hong Kong and Macao.
