Some of you older posters may remember us, setting off for a world cruise aboard our 36ft Westerly Corsair Moonshine. (We had loads of info and encouragement here) She was also in September YM.

I am distressed to report that she has suffered catastrophic damage while laid up in Grenada. Luckily Nicola is pregnant so we had returned to UK for the baby a few weeks before.

Grenada was a wonderful place to visit and we are devastated for the Island.

Any boaters laid up in Grenada, may contact us for a damage list at Grenada marine

I am really sorry to hear your news and hope that you are able to slavage as much as possible. Do you know when you might be able to get back over to her?

That was damn bad luck considering you were so far south. Were you aboard at the time?

When I was in St Maartin the year after a hurricane went through I spoke to a boat yard manager. His yacht survived sitting in the yard's travel hoist, which he reckoned was the only safe place to be.

Was the critical damage caused by adjacent boats?

Sorry to hear about your boat. However after the 1987 hurricane in France a lot of boats were "write-offs". The person who sold me my boat went there and bought some of the insurance wrecks. As he said , notably about a Sun Legende - grp boats are like plasticine, dead easy to fix. In less than a month this boat was like new and was being chartered.

Take heart, it may not be as bad as you fear.

John.

Forget the boat and look forward to your new addition, that is somthing that can't be replaced. The other was only Plastic, Wood or metal and can be replaced.????/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Dear All

Thanks for your kind words. Yes Moonshine is insured so we are hopeful. Damage is not fully known right now as comms out of the Island are difficult. We are looking forward to our new edition and compared to the REAL losses to homes and life that Ivan has caused, we have not suffered.

But she was/is our home and we were thumped by Isabel last year so headed south to what should have been a safe area. There is no doubt weather patterns are changing.

Even in the light of what has happened I wouldn't have missed the trip for the world and will continue somehow. I can only encourage all those setting off this autumn for the Atlantic and the trade winds. It is a privilege to be out there....what ever the weather
