I'm currently looking around for a first "big-boat". I've lots of experience in dinghies, and pretty much know what I'm doing on the sea. However I have a non-yotty Mrs and 2 small kids. Hence I'd looking for soemthing cheap and forgiving with a bit of space.

I'm looking at a couple of 24/70s this weekend . Does anyone have experience of these since I'd like to get some info on any specifics to look for - faults, good stuff etc etc.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Dave.

These boats are under-rated and are actually quite good, especially in fin keel guise, although the twin keel one will sit high off the ground! They are designed by Ian Anderson, and built both by Atlanta marine and Hurley marine at different times in the seventies. I would look out for flexing of the deck where the mast sits, and movement in the main bulkhead, easily strengthened. They were generally built well but a lot were home completed. Another point is that a lot seem to have petter mini 6 inboards, which ,if they haven't been replaced, should be well scrutinised, especially if the anode on the alloy head doesn't look to have been changed recently.
As a budget big small boat, I think they rate OK, being safe, having a good ballast ratio and even, the much sought after, standing headroom !
I would however, also consider a Sadler 25, or even a Westerly pageant, if you find any affordable ones.
Hope this helps

Am currently looking for one myself, had a look at a couple this week but not too impressed, what do you feel a suitable cost.??One I looked at was reduced to £9000 but surveyor spotted problem at mast foot and osmosis problem, which seem typical. Also had original engine so seemed expensive as £7 - £8k seems typical.Interested to see how you get on.
