This is a slightly edit PM(to proptect those involved) I get asked this sort of thing quite a bit so I decided to post.
You can pick my brain anytime, saw your pm last night and had to think about it for a bit, that boat was for sale when I was first looking for a Fairey boat in summer 2001 i spoke to him, his asking price then was £XXXXX, dunno what he wants now, he's had it quite a while, its basically the same as mine, except for a longer aft deck which I have not seen but I suspect does not look as good as the ordinary ones, I never went to look at it, and the reason why was what I had to think about, then I remembered, its got a Jersey Keel, you may have heard about them, its a scaffold bar bolted under the boat running along the keel so that with the aid of piles or legs you can dry it out, the trouble is it means that the boat only does about 20 knots, it would be dead simple to remove it, matter of taking an angle grinder to some bolt heads, moving the keel out of the way, knocking out the bolts and glueing in some pegs, less than a days work, should then do 30 knots if nice and light and clean and perkin engines are good (but they are old and probly suspect).
Fairey boats come on the market often like this one where the owner cant keep up and hence its gone down hill a bit, maybe a bit unused and is quite cheap, very good ones tend not to be for sale so often and tend to be a lot more money although the most expensive one on the market currently I had surveyed and did not buy. H28 range from about £10k for a shed to £35k for a really good one.
You need to check for rot, its in his garden so you need to sound the hull for delamination, just like checking for loose plaster in a house, dead simple and quite obvious when you find it, you'll find a few small areas, then look at all spray rails for movement and splits esp at the front where they are most curved, then check chine rails, again at front is worse, then check around top edge of hull for softness, water gets into end grain and causes de-lam and rot, this is worst at bow and at transom, check transom for soft areas around the faying line between hull and the plywood. Caulking of teak deck is important, this might be what he thinks needs re-doing, leaking deck rot out the ply under deck, so need to look at underside to check for this. Check anything that is made of marine ply ie whole cabin structure, cabin roof is hot moulded and can suffer at leading corners. Inside check underdeck and check all bunk fronts and galley and heads construction for cracks and movement, esp the 4 floor supports under the fwd cabin sole section.
It should not leak as H28 is a 1 peice hull, but spect it will.
If you find movement all over the place and about 10 to 15 bits of localised rot then you have looked at it thoroughly and its about average!!
There is about 7 or 8 H28 on the market at the moment, from £15 to £35k.
I am gonna take a couple of bits out and post this litery master peice on the forum.
hope it helps, call me if you need to know more, 07811 37xxxx or 02380 45xxxx
