When I install my new Garmin speed/depth transducer, the Airmar transducer has both functions in one unit. I want to remove the old Airmar units which will leave a spare hole, not something you need in a hull! So any ideas how to plug this hole?

There is one good reason for removal: it is not unknown for the plastic tube of an old unit to fracture as it weakens over time. The stress point at the thread root can cause the tube to break off under the nut.

To drift a thread, I have a similar problem relating to a VDO Knotmaster speed sensor. This goes through a small hole drilled at an angle of about 45 degrees. I have put off removing it for several years because I do not know how best to seal the hole. It worries me that the oggin comes up the "tube" where the cable was and all that is between it and the inside or my boat is this spiral of metal coated with plastic.

Do the job properly with epoxy and glass cloth next time you're out of the water. It's not all that hard. Until then, just leave the old one in.
