What is the reccomended compound for bedding in a Seacock hull fitting (1 1/2"). A lot of people advise Sikaflex but I understand that is also a bonding agent and will make future removal difficult.

I always use a non setting bedding compound, in my case, linseed oil putty/bedding compound, from Classic marine.

I'm a great fan of 'Sikaflex' (ie polyurethane type) adhesives for many purposes, but in this case without question I'd use a polysulphide. ( I believe 'LifeCaulk' is the dominant yachtie brand). It will hapily cure under water ... important if you are working between tides... and will eventually be removable when the time comes.

It cures to a distinctly 'rubbery' consistency. Be aware that it is incompatible with certain plastics.

Sikaflex is a powerful adhesive and it does give problems with removal (see my question on removing a Blakes Seacock and the very helpful replies in response). However, it is damn good stuff and can be relied upon 100% to keep the water out. Despite the difficulties with removal, I would not use anything else.

G’day Mikenda.
Through hull fittings are not something you need to change on a regular basis, so Sikaflex would be an ok choice. Also not that fittings made of any metal will corrode, plastic fittings will break, however the fibre reinforced fittings don’t corrode and don’t break, a point you might like to consider as you are changing a fitting.
