I`m repairing a separated hull / deck joint ( biscuit tin lid type ). The plan is to replace all corroded galvinised steel bolts with stainless ones at closer centres and use some sort or sealant or adhesive between the joint. Could anyone recommend a suitable material for this purpose? I intend to secure the deck mounted chain plates to the hull sides with bolts and brackets on the inside to prevent further problems. Any help much appreciated.

There's a Sikaflex gunge that will do it (Sikaflex291 I think). Check their website. If surfaces are prepared properly - degreased, abraided etc it sticks like s**t to a blanket.

The best I think is Polyurethane adhesive/sealant. Its adhesion is 10 x stronger than silicone, providing the surfaces are clean, and is water and oil resistant.
One trade name is Purflex. Available from seamark nunn.
Insulated Trailer bodies are bonded onto the chasis with this and no fixings.

Sikaflex 11 FC.This is a very strong poliurethane adhesive/mastic that's not expensive as it is not marine branded.

Do yourself a big favour and listen to Dick_James. You can't beat Sikaflex and if you contact them or find their web site Sika.com you can download 1 page instructions for all different marine adhesives that they make. It will be cheaper and give you more peace of mind to do it right first time.
Good Luck

G'day Homerj,

How is good old Dublin today, a bit cooler than here in Oz I bet.

Re: sealant for hull/deck, Sikaflex for sure if you only want to seal it, but have you considered putting a fibreglass tape on the inside? Muck stronger and will never leak.

Also, consider fixing a small triangle of marine ply right-angled to the hull, located with its top glassed to the underside of the deck and the back glassed to the hull, this gives good access to the chain plates and bolts and takes up little or no space.

Use Epoxy resins only for the above.

I did the above on a 30 footer about 10 or 12 years ago, still going strong, no leaks, and no chain plate movement or stress cracking.

I hope this helps, Avagoodweekend. Old Salt Oz......
