We have all been in this situation, in a nice marina and a boat next door has a really flapping and banging halyard.

How do you stop it, is it the done thing to climb on someones boat to stop it if there aren't around?

Piece of shock cord with a plastic hook on either end, and just pull it away from the mast and towards on of the shrouds.

If they complain about you interfering, just tell them the noise was keeping you awake and you were concerned about their rigging being damaged. Then make sure the b@stards don't keep your bungie...

Officially, you are not allowed to climb onto anyone's boat to change the layout of their halyards or rigging to suit your requirements for any reason, without their permission.

If it causing you a problem, either move or inform the marina manager who will hopefully ask the boat owner if the slap, slap can be stopped or abated.

You could leave yourself open to a claim for damages whilst you are on the offending boat.

Possibly very "correct" legally, but a little OTT for the sake of a bungie, which is probably what the owner would do anyway, and the subsequent decent night's sleep?

the best solution is to use a tatty old bit of orange twine( the type farmers use for bailing strw) or that blue polypropylene lorry rope both of which are highly visible .

You must leave it tatty so he spots it before he castes off in order for him to remove it.

In my opinion all boats should have 100ft of lorry rope on board, it floats and is so cheap it can be used to hold a raft if you are on the inside and want to leave first.

WADR.... yeah right!

1 oclock in morning, get up, walk to marina office, (no-one in ), find night watchman, explain that owner is not on board and halliard frapping, walk with him back to office.
Fire up putor and try to work out how to get owners address or phone number.
Persuade night watchman to phone owner in middle of night.... need i go on?

Alternatively
Walk across pontoon and tie up offending item.

When I had a saily boat, I wouldn't ever have minded if someone tied off the halyards to stop them frapping when I wasn't there. OTOH I used to be quite particular about tying them off myself - although more than once I tried to hoist the mainsail only to find that I'd forgotten to untie the cord restraining the main halyard.:D

Officially, you are not allowed to climb onto anyone's boat ...

What's your basis/authority for saying that? I'd suggest that is incorrect, and that there is no legal prohibition whatsoever (in the UK). It may be trespass, but that is not a prohibition

For sure, if you cause damages. But most of us are grown up enough to assess that risk and take it, and of course not actually cause any damage

This will work:

A wee note as follows:

"Dear Yacht owner,

I'm not sure if you are new to sailing, but may I suggest that it is considered very poor seamanship to leave a frapping halyard. (One or more of the lines going aloft, slapping against the mast)

If you're not sure how to stop the offending line then I'm sure any fellow boat owner or member of the marina staff would be keen to assist you."

We had this situation in Lymington last weekend. We were just visiting, but the people on the boat next door to us are permanent berthholders there, and they called the marina office - and someone turned up on a bicycle within 5 mins, went on board, and solved the problem. Impressive service.

Cheers
Jimmy

What a load of clap trap!!

A good set of bolt croppers should fix it

LOL :D

We can laugh at it now while sat in our air con offices looking out the window at dolly birds passing by in the sunshine but....................

at 0300 hrs during a sleepless stormy night it becomes a serious option and unlike the bungie/rope , it doesnt leave any evidence ;)

Perfectly acceptable in my book. But my question is how do you silence these mobo exhausts that are deliberately left unsilenced? Is itnot time we had a noise limit like for motorbikes?
