I've ordered a full-batten main from a local sailmaker, and today he sent out some assistants to take the measurements. They took the P, E and tack measurements but not the angle between the mast and the backstay or the space at the top for the headboard (both of which I have on the sailplan--they said they didn't need it).

Am I being taken? Isn't one of the advantages of a full-batten sail the ability to increase the size of the roach? In my case, there's plenty of room to do this. Also, I'd appreciate some advice about the proper sailcloth weight, since no information was immediately forthcomng.

Thanks a lot

As regards measurements - if the sailmaker is taking the measurements, its up to him the make sure the sail fits - so its his problem.

As regards increased roach - did you order this? If not, I would expect you to get whatever is standard for your boat. If you want more, get on to the sailmaker now.

Cloth - again, unless you specify otherwise, you will get whatever your sailmaker regards as normal for your size / design of boat. I would go talk to him about this, and seek his advice, as choice of cloth can have an influence on price.

Trust the Sailmaker, and get him to make it in Pentex. Modified Dacron, you won't regret it. Shape steady as the proverbial rock. Marginally more expensive than Dacron, say £ 30 on the average main and lasts longer! Looks a bit hi-tech though.
