How to get a Stix rating?

For an older boat how does one go about obtaining a STIX rating, and possibly SSS also?

I believe that Stix is calculated by a Sooper Sekrit Formula to which only the RYA have access, and that one therefore contacts them with a polite request and a rather large amount of money. Four hundred quid has been suggested before. You would also, I imagine, need a full set of drawings for the boat.

Not sure the RYA still do it as they discontinued there RCD certification service a couple of years ago.

Perhaps not worth doing on an older boat as the result might not be what you want to see. The boat is what it is, assuming the OPs Rival is what he is interested in, and has proved itself very capable in a wide variety of conditions.

I guess a lot of the data is available from from Peter Brets drawings which you have probably obtained from the ROA. The IRC have an application form which included two sections, one to be included in their register, one to obtain a STIX. The form needs a Naval Architect 'or other qualified person' to complete the data. A call to Ian Nicolson, details below, who also owns a Rival, would be very useful in my opinion.

Application form available to download here: -

Thinking about it a bit more you don't really need the IRC form, unless you want a rating, you just need the Naval Architect to crunch numbers and produce the AVS data. I guess the question of cost then comes down to their fee. There might also be some weights involved to actually measure righting moments.

If its an older boat that raced offshore under CHS, it will have had a STIX or an SS in the past. Even my Evolution 25 had an offshore SSS of 22. Maybe RORC can help iwth historical data/certs?

I assume you are hoping to meet
SSS: 15
STIX: 23
AVS: 130-0.005*m (where m = the boat's minimum sailing weight)
These figures rule out boats like a Hunter 707 and baby Bendytoys - the Rival 32 exceeds them handsomely (or uglily depending on the eye of the beholder :p) as does my wee boat. Dinnae fash yersel!

Yes, details are on the IRC website.

The RORC will calculate the STIX for free but getting the data will probably involve engaging a Naval Architect.

Yes, that just what I'm wanting to know for.
I'm a little surprised that the IRC list of data for various boats doesn't include any Rivals. Maybe no-one's silly enough (or silly as me) to race them? I see that a Contessa is listed.
So ah'll nae fash masel then.

The CO 32 has it because it was used as the benchmark for STIX as minimum for CatA - at 32, the same as my Bavaria 33! Would not be confident that smaller Rivals (31&2) would meet that.

The target the OP is aiming for is a STIX >23. I am absolutely confident that a Rival 32 beats that. The STIX for the CO32 is actually 33 with an AVS of 155.
