How To Cosmetically Deface A New Outboard Engine

I will be getting a new main outboard engine and I would rather not have a very attractive looking outboard leg sticking out the back that might prove irrestistable to the local scrotes. So how to make it look dull and old but nothing permanent?

You could use an aerosol rust appearance paint, available on Amazon, also you can get spray on cobweb.
Some of the rust effect paints are water based so should be fairly easy to wash off. The cobweb again is fairly easy to clean off.

Take the hood home. Thieves won't want a motor without a hood.

As said above, take the hood home and replace it with one of these.

Get a ducks back cover for it.
Or if you are keen, you could get it wrapped to look aged.

Paint it black and stick Mercury stickers on it, no one with any sense would touch it

Our local crime prevention officer recommends removing the cowling and fitting a cowling cover as detailed in the photo above.

I know a sailing club that regularly had outboards stolen. The harbourmaster told them to cover the hood with plain black vinyl. They did and had no more thefts.

friend with two honda 90s had GPS trackers fitted, after similar engines were nicked in Hayle, they had somehow paddled the boat round to the slip and loaded straight in the van. Worth it I suppose when the o/b is £6k or more.
A honda 90 weighs 163kg, how you lift that off a transom I don't quite know, must need machinery.
Others at Helford have just thrown a tin of red paint over it. Perhaps there is mileage in getting hold of an old cowling for that purpose.

Also get a set of "die-stamps" and mark surfaces of the outboard with your postcode.

I put the boat name in large red vinyl letters on the cover (and painted the hub of the prop red) the lettering is still there but even on black the uv fading would make them clear to read if removed.
But the rusty spray would be easier to apply.
