How many women use the forum?

What is your gender?

This is a lively forum and I thought it would be more interesting to see what people do when they are (apparently) asked to reveal their own gender - the poll was selected to be public. It is designed to select those who wish to show their gender (assuming it was answered "truthfully", etc., etc.). The poll is designed to show % by gender amongst those who are willing to show their gender. I find this more interesting than simply % users by gender, and I thought those participating might. I did the poll from the belief that women who use the forum are a small minority (not proven). It is interesting to me that (in a poll that would reveal gender) there are women who will reveal their gender. Also, that (apparent) men participate and reveal their gender (mostly, apparently).

I also wonder about usernames. Apparently, some women have some interest in being identified as women (shown above). Looking at the usernames of those who identified themselves as women: can I tell that those women are women from their usernames? No. I don't think so. That is interesting to me, also. So, if these are women, their interest in being identified as women does not necessarily extend to usernames. It would also make any (apparent) woman who does reveal an obviously female username in the poll interesting. Why does she do that? Does she think about it? That's the kind of thing I think about when I see a new usernames. Presumably other forum members occasionally wonder about the gender of users (whether they admit it or not). I don't expect the participants to care greatly. They were just participating in the poll.

It seems to me that amongst those claiming to be men there are, proportionately more male usernames than boat names. Why is that?

I'd suspect that, most of those who identified as "uncertain" (though not all, from the comments) are men. The humorous comments seem to come from apparent men.

Whether it is truthful depends on those participating.

Wow, you obviously give a ****.
Probably the only person who does though :)

She walks like a woman and talks like a man...

I'd say the gender makeup of this forum is most likely 80-85% male.
Other forums are divided differently. If you go over to liveaboard forums they are more evenly split.

If you look around next time you're in a marina and count the number of boats that have women owners, not married couples where it's apparently jointly owned, but yachts owned outright by a woman.

it's roughly 3 out of every 50 by my quick head count reconing. (based on a marina in Essex and the same numbers seem to figure in another marina in Gosport)

If we look at GRP motorboats, the numbers drop further. If we count narrowboats/barges, then numbers rise dramatically to nearer 35%
(based on personal experience of inland waterways and having a long history of involvement with motorboats, alongside yachting)

my user name reflects the character in a framed picture in my saloon. I have a ltd ed print of marilyn monroe on the wall, Sugar Kane was the character she played in Some like it hot.

when I first joined the forum I too was interested to find out how many women there were here - I also asked the question and it flushed out a few other females who I became friends with. However, your poll has quite surprised me! There are some names in both lists that I thought would have been in the other :) .

FWIW, when I joined this forum, I had no idea that people used their boat names - it didn't even occur to me. I used a 'tag' that I used in a chat room for a completely different topic. It's derivative of my name.

Am I the only one surprised by the number of dogs apparently posting here these days? I guess it's the touch screen devices that allow it as it's very difficult to use a traditional keyboard with muddy paws.

And why so few cats?

I think the number of women who actively use this forum is very small - for some reason.

Is it only me who finds Lady in Red having been referred to as Lady in Bed so many times disquieting?

Isn't there a Forum Name Analysis Forum somewhere which would be more appropriate than a sailing forum for a thread like this?

I'm analysing it because I was questioned about it over and over and over - a simple poll.

"more appropriate than a sailing forum..."

Do you mean the Scuttlebutt? I thought Scuttlebutt was an alternative name for gossip (water-cooler type stuff). Maybe I can get this moved to the Lounge where people are discussing politics, Simondjuk.

It's showing 20% female now which I think is about what I would have guessed. I think a lot of females read the forum but don't necessarily post, or they post under gender-neutral user names, which is why many of you guys think there aren't many of us here.
