We are still popping out for short sails and I wonder how many forum members sail throughout a winter season?

I used to, year ago, when I kept a Westerly Jouster in the canal at Crinan over the winter. Some great sails, but generally very short, and no cabin heating except a Tilley lamp ... lots of condensation.

I tried leaving my current boat in the water two winters ago and had time to take her out precisely once. Not worth the worry, even though it was a little cheaper than winter ashore.

Brrr.. I would guess the cargo has to be heated to pump it and stop waxing or other issues?

The cargoes arrive in rail tankcars .... usually solid ! They then take up to 2 days to heat before discharged to heated shore tanks.
The via insulated lines to the jetty and to ship ... ship has heating coils in the tanks to maintain liquid state.

All good stuff !

I grabbed the one nice day this week and nipped round to Dover, it was amazingly warm and sunny for the literal middle of winter. Dover is quite spooky with no ferries running!

Same off Harwich this afternoon.
I nipped out from Titchmarsh and saw no commercial traffic or boats underway.

Was a time when by the end of September the yachts where in their mudberths or propped up ashore, whilst the masts were down and rigging off and in the store along with all the other parafanalia. Then came the checking of the blocks, varnishing them and making good before the winter set in it was a major money maker for the yards especially if the loose ballast had to come out for varnishing or keel bolts pulled involving moving water tanks etc......since Grp it’s a whole new world!

Sitting on a mooring buoy now with just a couple of Aussie yachts anchored behind us off a (I think) uninhabited little island after a cracking 9 days of sailing. Cool wind now after a sunny day but I know I’m cheating being in the Canaries. I only occasionally sailed in the Winter in the UK but have some lovely memories of going down to the boat to fix things and seeing light winds and cold clear sky and just going out for a few hours instead.
