Brian,
Couldn't have said it better meself, especially the bit about the informality of day shifts. For us, Liz loves her sleep and I'm happy with fewer hours. However, inevitably I'd go down for my kip at 7am only to be woken 30 minutes later by the sound of a screeming reel and Liz shouting to get my arse in gear to deal with the slimy, flappy thing that was miraculously converted into an excellent evening meal later in the day!

If you are taking crew then be aware that you are responsible for removing them from the Caribbean island you land at. So if you sail them in you have to provide a plane ticket to get them out. (Make sure they buy one before they get on board).

The "easy" way round this, is to only take EU nationals as crew. You're only obliged to drop of EU nationals on EU teritory. Quick trip to Martinique, Guadeloupe, etc... takes care of that.

Crew Disposal

You are right.
But my point becomes very significant as you dump a crew man on some obscure pacific island, for example.

IMHO two normal people cannot keep a good lookout and if they do, it is atthe expense of getting ever more tired as the voyage progresses. When you then meet a problem as you are bound to, you begin handling that problem, both tired.

can't agree with that. i was quite happy to stand watch for 17-18 hours. i spent most of my time in the cockpit and only left the deck unattended for less than 5 minutes at a time. our longest passage in that mode was 14 days but we could have carried on longer.

if we'd had to wear waterproofs and been thrown about in a small boat it might have been different but in southern waters i see no problem.

try Mariners general in the US. They were prepared to tailor my insurance to what I wanted to do with the boat, rather than as all the British companies I tried who seemed to want me to use the boat according to their policy requirements. On the one occassion I did have to claim, they were available 24/7, including mobile number of the guy they allocated to deal with situation. They also did a rolling policy so it changed depending what I was doing with boat. E.g. premium for when in storage ashore for six months, rewrote premium for moving her from Alabama to Miami, Readjust for East Coast blast to Potomac, then readjust for storage ashore. So I guess they would only charge the higher rate for the Pond bit. The way they operated seemed to be, do what you want with your boat, only tell us before you do it so we can give you the cover you need as you need it. They were quite happy to discuss USA to Falmouth and retaining my custom once boat ensconced back in UK. Policies are underwritten in London! Everything done by phone, fax and email. Only thing posted was actual policy document when returned from underwriters. PM me if you would like contact details.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions everyone. Still researching and getting quotes.... found one for two handed but almost double the premium of the quote from St Margarets for three handed. For info, we have both been sailing for 25 years plus (inc two years in Med), husband is boatbuilder/prof. crew, I have done quite a lot of miles with and without him. The boat is new (built by us for extended cruising). All new kit inc Hydrovane. Don't mind having friends along for the ride but reluctant to be forced into it with the difficulties of logistics and arrangements. Perhaps the best thing would be to register our Hydrovane as a human?
